How low in carbs does someone have to be to go into ketosis?

Many ketogenic diets call for 5% carbs.

Thoughts?

  • I keep my carbs between 50-60 and with exercise I am in a good ketosis. The exercise really helps keep the color deep on the stick :)

Everyone is different, but the standard is 5% of your total calories from your macronutrients.

Personally, I go even lower... right now I am averaging less than 10-15g of carbs per day, or around 1%. Oddly, even with my carbs so low I feel great!

I've lowered by carbs significantly these last few weeks, or what I would consider significantly.
I went from 45-50% to 25-30%. My weekly averages have been around 27-28%, maybe 150 g.
Since I started this on January 6, I haven't felt better, I usually feel better and for the 4 days a week I workout, I don't suffer any ill effects from the "lack" of carbs. I love it!
Just didn't know if that would get me to ketosis. I'm down about 4 pounds in that time.
How can I test it? Anything over the counter?
  • Hey, I have bought "Ketostix" at a drug mart or a pharmacy. Don't need a prescription here (Ontario) to get them.

You can get ketostix online or in most drug stores. To get into ketosis, it is recommended that you eat only 5% of your calories from carbs. Most begin induction by eating 20g or less per day. I eat 1300 calories per day and keep my carbs under 16g, although I have had a day here and there where I've eaten 30 or so and have remained in ketosis.

Also, I do know some people who can go as high as 50 or 60gs of carbs once they've done a few weeks at under 20. People's bodies react differently though, so YMMV.
