So you think the whole equation thing doesn't work?
You already have an HRM, fitbit and what to get the latest gadget?
You are obsessive about your numbers and really want to know how many calories you leave behind with each bathroom trip?

Get a bomb calorimeter!

You can even use it measure the calories in food!

You can get one form IKA and they even have a lease to own option: http://www.ika.com/-Lab-Eq/Calorimeters-Oxygen-Bomb-calorimeter-cph-330/

Now, in order to measure the calories you poop. Remember that you need to prepare your stool slurries correctly. Here is the improved method for fecal slurry preparation: http://www.clinchem.org/content/16/3/253.full.pdf

Or, you can consider that someone else has done the study and that, generally speaking, the calories adsorbed from food are a little off: http://suppversity.blogspot.de/2013/05/a-bomb-calorimeter-you-are-not-and.html

Seriously, look at that last link - it has some intersting info on macro absorption rates.

With the right equipment you can also measure the calories released by gases.

Ever wanted to know the energy release by how much methane a cow let go? Now you can.

It's not like methane is as important as a gas as CO2 or something...Naw...

Thank you sir, this has been weighing heavily on my mind for years. I was out in the pasture chasing cows around with a styrofoam cup and a lighter and getting nowhere. Maybe I can finally make some progress.

pffft - it doesn't mean that men are better, it just means that they are more full of poop

I think I will stick the to the inaccurate and complicated way.... with a dog, two cats, and a toddler I handle way too much poop as it is.

Ewwww! I used to collect pee samples and analyse them for micronutrients but that is so much worse.

Although it does remind me of a nutritionist I know who collected womens' menstrual blood for a study looking at iron metabolism... I was never brave enough to ask how she achieved it

Ahhh. I've wanted a bomb calorimeter since I used one in chemistry back in school. (We were just measuring the calories in foods, not calculating intake. I'm not sure we could've got away with faecal matter in class!!!!) Mind you, they're not accurate either!

The new lab calorimeters are a lot more accurate than the usual chemistry class ones.
