cabbage soup breakdown??

Hey all - I've been entering in 'cabbage soup - homemade' for my diet cabbage soup that I make each week, but I'm not sure what the breakdown of the ingredients are in the database. Does anyone know how to check that? I'm looking to modify the recipe to make it low carb, and I'm wondering if just eliminating the cabbage will bring it down to a low-carb, low-cal filler for throughout the day. I would probably add in broccoli and zucchini, then blanch some spinach just before serving to beef it up a bit since cabbage is the biggest component.

If you're making your own soup then use the recipe function to enter your own recipe, then you'll know what the nutritional breakdown for your specific recipe and ingredients is. You can also play then around with changing ingredients to see how that affects the nutrition.

Personally I think eating cabbage soup all day sounds terrible, but each to their own!

    Enter your recipe..

But I'd be on the toilet all day long. taking laxatives for weight loss might be easier and it will give you the same results.

so you basically want your soup to be low carb AND low fat AND low protein?

I would just do the master cleanse, it's probably more flavorful

I've been entering so many of my own recipes into the recipe builder because I want to be precise as possible. Since I often make tweaks to recipes I make, I usually end up with pretty different numbers compared to the nutrition info provided with the recipe. But I have too much time on my hands lol.

If you don't know how to do so (on the website, don't know if you can do it on a mobile device):
under the food tab, there's a "recipes" tab. simply select that and it brings you to a link where you can enter custom recipes (and your list of recipes you've entered before).

I don't understand.....You make it each week? Why not just put in the ingredients as you are making it? It sounds like you are really trying to overcomplicate it.....and eating way too much cabbage soup.

I see in your profile that you've yo-yo dieted for years. Doing ancient fad diets like cabbage soup is just going to continue your yo-yoing.

Eat foods you like at a reasonable deficit and you will loose weight. Simple and it works.

Soup of course. Because cooking things takes all the nutritions out so it's not water anymore.

Sounds like the recipe feature is what you need. You can enter your recipe there using the ingredients in your soup. Then you will know your are recording exactly what you ate. Good luck!

    Only water is water.

    Wait, what???

  • Wow, I didn't realize what an uproar it would cause by suggesting that I remove cabbage from what I called cabbage soup, and revise it to a "vegetable soup" by swapping out the cabbage with broccoli, zucchini and spinach , but I will concede to all of your years of wisdom, as I have only been on MFP for a short period of time, and being on fatsecret.com for the last six years probably isn't the same. I can't wait until I'm as thin as all of you so that I can share in criticizing others' efforts - finally, something else to look forward to besides skinny jeans!

I had my greatest success with weight loss while doing Weight Watchers, which is where I got my recipe for cabbage soup. The soup was a 'zero-point' addition to a diet, so that if you were feeling hungry, you could have some without changing your points for the day. I've always had an issue with overeating with carbs, however (even whilst on Weight Watchers), and I'm looking to be more conscious of my overall diet. The last thing I want to do is eat a 'healthy' snack (yes, this is a snack, not my diet - my recipe was called 'diet cabbage soup,' sorry for the miscommunication) that is laden with carbohydrates - much as I wouldn't want to eat a snack that is high in fat or sugar.

I apologize to all for suggesting a substitution in a recipe. But, for all those that suggested it, I will definitely try substituting a multi-vegetable soup for hot water, since I have obviously reduced the veggies to a water-like state by cooking out all of the nutrients. Next week I will move on to the raw/vegan diet, as I am sure that I will need to replace my current 'fad' diet with another. I appreciate all of your guidance!

I have made the cabbage soup before...it is fairly good and low calorie.

I use it only for getting in some extra veggies or if I am still hungry and don't have many calories left.

It is also great for using up those veggies that might go bad before I have time to use them.

Are you doing the Cabbage Soup Diet? As much as I love vegetable soup...I couldn't follow that diet. I like pizza too much and crackers...well...I like everything too much.

I build my basic recipes using MFP's recipe builder...then just edit it when I change ingredients. I rarely cook a recipe the same way twice.

Nikkinnicole, You just do you. We all try new things at some point, especially in our desperation to shed pounds. So sorry there are so many mean people (bullies) who don't have the heart or patience to be kind to someone asking a question. I've always been told a question never asked is the dumb question, so you did right in asking. Ignore the sarcasm that comes along with social media and good luck on your journey. But there are a lot of nice people on here. Just sad that the mean ones stand out.

Why can't some of you just not respond if you don't have anything constructive to say.

You keep using this word. I do not believe it means what you think it means.

On behalf of all of the "mean people", I would like to apologize that our sound and appropriate advice was phrased differently than you would have worded it. Apparently, even though we're all different and we all have to find what works for each of us individually, there is only One True Way for online communication. I will raise this issue at our next Mean People meeting and see to it that appropriate changes are made.

Weird, I'm having a hard time finding the sound and approprate advice that you posted.

Aww, I'm just kidding. I'm sure you've helped LOTS of people by jumping on a bandwagon. Cheers! :drinker:

Ahh, you're new here. Come on in, I'll show you around.

Oh, to clarify, "our sound and appropriate advice" was on behalf of an *entire group of people*...commonly known as the "mean people". Some of them posted some stuff earlier in this thread (and other threads like it). You may have even read some of it. While I personally didn't share anything particularly insightful in *this* thread (or at least not that I remember right now), you can find my many contributions in my past posting history. (It's the blue number of posts under my profile pic.)

Anyhow, take off your coat...have a look around...and enjoy your stay. If you're like *most* people, a year from now, you'll have an entirely different understanding of what's going on in here and you'll realize that some of the best advice doesn't always initially seem like the best advice at first. However, if you end up like a *few* people here, you can spend your time in the forums defending the highly sensitive people from every potentially perceived sleight or less-than-warm-and-fuzzily-phrased comment. (Bonus points if you make rude posts/threads about how other people are rude. Seriously, those are my favorites.)

Which path will you take? Only time will tell.

To support the OP i actually love cabbage soup...
but I like it because of the cabbage love the taste and texture.. call me weird

So i think taking out cabbage and its very little calories would be pointless...
Maybe you should through in some shredded chicken if you don't want the cabbage... then you might as well call it chicken soup? lol:laugh:
