Dieting sucks

Hello, Im Pat, Im new to this sight. It comes highly recommended. I am 55 yrs old, and disabled from an accident 16 yrs ago, and need to lose a signifigant amount of weight, due to inactivity. I started going to the gym, and work out a little, and cut out all sugar, and most carbs, and ive lost 12 lbs so far. It is hard, but I think im doing ok. And I love this sight, its very helpfull!

You are doing better than ok...you have made the decision to do this for yourself and you have already managed to lose 12 pounds!! That is so great and you should be very proud of that fact..Just keep telling yourself that this is a journey to become healthy and while it is not easy YOU CAN DO IT!!! Every step you take and every good choice you make gets you closer to where you want to be...Good Luck on the journey!!!! :drinker:0

First off the word diet does suck. So if you change your mindset and think of this as a lifestyle change, I'm guessing it wouldn't suck so much.
Personally, I am not on a diet. I am living a much healthier lifestyle which includes healthier food choices and moving my *kitten* a lot, a lot more than I ever did. I still eat what I like. And i still have chili cheeseburgers at a fast food restaurant with fries probably once a week. I just have learned over these last 6 months the word moderation. I make better choices 24 hours a day. And I made the choice to change my lifestly so that when I get to where I want to be I can actually know how to stay there and not gain it all back by going back to old habits. Its a learning process. If you believe you are worth it, that's all it takes. Stay strong.0 -
It does but it will become your new norm in time, keep you head up because you are off to a great start! Make yourself some friends to help you out along the way.0

Well, i dont eat cookies, cake, ice cream, or anything like that anymore. My sweet has become sugar free pudding. I have also started portion control, and counting my calories does help. This site has been very helpful, because when i see the numbers, i know my intake. Also im eating more salad, and vegs. I dop eat most of what I want, I just limit the amount.0

Great! Have you looked into the "Eat to Live" method? I like it because it's all about MORE - more fruit, more vegetables and the more greens you eat the more you lose. Good luck!0 -

Nope. Sugar isn't the enemy. Unless you're diabetic or prediabetic, you're fine eating most sugars. Fruit is great for you, and the occasional treat (I'm a candy fiend), won't derail you as long as you stay within your calorie limit.
Carbs aren't evil at all. Enjoy them. You may find that being able to still enjoy foods you love helps you keep going. Deprivation of your favorite foods tends to lead to either misery or binging, or giving up altogether.

Dieting does suck, because it implies that you just do it for awhile until you have lost the weight and then you get to go back to the way it was. This sets up yo yo weight loss and weight gain that many people fall into. You need to find a way to make it sustainable, learning to eat the proper amounts, so that you don't set yourself up for that yo yo.
Losing weight is all about the amount of calories you are eating, more so than what you are eating. Of course, limiting sugar can reduce the amounts of calories you are consuming. But unless you have a health issue that your doctor has warned you to reduce sugar, then no need to avoid all sugar. The benefits of fruit and the fiber in it offset the sugars (again, unless your doctor has said to limit them).0 -
It's been pointer out to me Fuit sugars are just carbs so if you are keeping to your caloric goals they are fine. However I will point out if you are using one of the low carb diets like atkins or paleo etc then the point of low carbs no sugars is to kick start ketosis and it is proven to work better in the early stages of dieting at taking off weight (I've done atkins and this time out started on atkins but have moved to calory counting and excercise (Atkins took care of the first 15 or so pounds i lost since christmas, Calorie counting and ecercise the next 4 (recorded here)
It sounds like you have a great start under way, and if it is working for you I would stick with it. The big thing is to change your choices long term so you don't just end up back. I went back to beer (bad Idea for me) and then slowly slid into bad habits along with less excercise due to a torn muscle. Now 3 years after getting to my weight i'm back trying to lose 55 pounds overall0 -

Well done on losing the weight. I say keep going to the gym, but try to make more sustainable food choices.
Have you heard of the flexible dieting approach? You eat "healthily" i.e. veggies, lean protein, minimal added sugar, most of the time, but you have about 10% of your calories as "discretionary" i.e. cake / chocolate etc. As long as you get within your calorie limit, you will lose weight. You should aim to meet your protein, fat, carb, and micronutrients for a healthy diet. As long as you achieve that, you can eat cake. Much less prone to falling off the wagon.0
