I keep seeing people post about "just have a protein shake" and whatnot... What exactly is this "protein shake" that everybody is talking about? I like to make smoothies, but I've never made a protein shake... ?

You can buy whey protein isolate from most health food stores, gyms and fitness shops. If you get pure then you can blend it up with things like berries and seeds or you can buy ready flavoured and then make it up with water xxx0

Some are high in calories, so you can alter them. I make this shake at home after my workout and love it:
1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder
1/2 banana
1/2 C skim milk
1 tbs peanut Butter
ice
mix in blender. Tastes like a real chocolate shake!!0 -

There's 94 recipes on that site...I'm pretty boring and just use 250m water, 1/4 cup fresh strawberries and 1 scoop of whey protein0 -
As you see there are many varieties.
I use a protein whey powder
1/2 of a banana
1/4 c. strawberries or any fruit
1 cup Vanilla Soy milk
Since I am type 2 diabetic I add
ground flaxseed 1 tbsp.
Cinnamon 1 tsp.
Enjoy and it is yummy!!!:bigsmile:0 -

I've been perfecting my protein shake for sometime. Your mileage may vary based on goals. I use this one right after a workout with weights when my body is most receptive to absorbing protein. Must be consumed within 30-60 minutes after workout for best results. I have a tall frame and thus much higher calorie requirements than most, so you might tone down ingredients to complement your plan.
1 banana
1-1.5 scoops whey protein powder (prefer chocolate)
Add some regular milk and/or chocolate soy milk
A dollup of organic peanut butter
5-7 ice cubes (Ice makes the shakes a little thicker. I do not like them watery)
1/2 tablespoon of organic wheat germ
1/2 tablespoon of Brewers Yeast Plus
1/4 teaspoon of Ascorbic Acid powder (vitamin C - healthy and brings out the flavor)
A dash of lecithin granules (very healthy and acts as thickener)
Dash of honey or agave nectar
Optional (I may add any of these given ingredients to change things up)
Other fruit, especially berries
Yogurt
A few raw almonds
Soft tofu
Greens Plus powder0 -

Just wondering, whats the yeast for?0 -
Just wondering, whats the yeast for?
Brewer's yeast has many great health benefits including highly bioavailable minerals like chromium and selenium, vitamins, anti-oxidant compounds. It also helps maintain proper blood sugar levels. Here are some details:

and here is the exact kind I use:

Mine is pretty boring.
1 C skim milk
1 scoop whey protein isolate natural vanilla
1/2 frozen banana and/or 2 frozen whole strawberries
1 tsp ground flax
I find using frozen fruit makes it easier to gag down. :-)0 -
Thought I would bump this with possibly my best shake yet :P
APPLE PIE PROTEIN SHAKE
2 cups skim milk
1 scoop natural protein powder
250g canned sliced apple
2 Arnotts Nice biscuits
1 tsp cinnamon0 -
I've got one that is pretty much my go-to when I do it. I'll make a couple of substitutions when I feel like changing it up, but for the most part this is what I do when I take it....
1 cup of water
1 serving of protein powder
1 banana (sub raspberrys, strawberrys, blueberrys, etc...)
1 packet of instant oatmeal (sub organic or unsweetened peanut butter)
2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed meal
As much ice as I want. (depends on how thick i want the shake)
Good luck!0 -
1 scoop protein powder
1 cup skim milk
1 cup frozen berries (any kind)
Simple and delicious....Sometimes I add nonfat greek yogurt....0 -
I do an egg beaters shake. 6oz of egg beaters, 5-6 strawberries, 1 low carb 80 calorie strawberry and banana yogurt with some ice in a blender. Supper yummy and delicious and cheap0

I use:
4-6 frozen strawberries
1 cup almond milk
1 scoop Chocolate IsoWhey protein
1 cup baby spinach
1 Tbsp PB or PB2 powder
Sometimes I add a little extra water to help the spinach blend in. Really can't taste it at all and makes a huge shake You can basically add whatever you like. Fruits, yogurt, milk, water, ice, protein -- it's up to you what flavour profile, calorie count and nutrition you want in your shake, really. Just need a blender and some creativity0 -
Some tips; it tastes gross in water, don't believe the other posters, lol! It tastes better blended then just shaken and if you add frozen fruit it makes it frothier so its more like a milk shake.
I use Body Fortress, it’s from Walmart.
1 scoop chocolate Body Fortress Whey Protein Powder ($19 cdn)
1/2 banana frozen
1 cup skim milk.0 -
bump for later...thanks for the yummy ideas!!!! Buying some protein powder tonight!!!0
