Hashimoto's Disease

A little background information:
I am 24 years old and was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease a few months before my wedding (October 2013). As a result I was bummed I had a hard time losing weight after working so hard the whole year before preparing for my wedding. I had a coworker tell me to go get my thyroid check after talking with her about how I was feeling. Sure enough, I had Hashimotos. Honestly I had never really heard or thought of this disease before a few months ago. Now I feel like it's all I search for!

I have cut out bread, sugar, and most carbs. I still eat fruits that have carbs and sugars in them. I am on a 1200 calorie diet, which is plenty of food since most of my food is such low calorie. I eat when I'm hungry. Some days I will be 1400 calories and some days will be 1200.
The question I have is...has anyone who has Hashimotos taken a daily vitamin with their thyroid medication. I know it says on the label to take 4 hours later, but I was curious if it made a difference with this particular disease.

Anyone else have Hashimotos with some advice to losing weight.

Eating too few carbs can actually be quite damaging to the thyroid. Hashimotos is an autoimmune disease where the body "attacks" itself. I have had a lot of clients have quite good success with the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol. You may want to check it out.

Don't take your vitamin with your thyroid meds. It will block the absorption of your meds.

Most my carbs come from fruits. I am not below my recommended carb levels. I have modeled my diet off the Paleo Diet. I am losing weight fine with everything, just wanted answers about taking the vitamin. Thanks!
  • Hi, Kiki...I too have Hashimotos Disease. I'm on 100mcg Synthroid and 7.5 mcg Cytomel Daily among other meds for a Pit Tumor. I've been on iron for anemia and a multi vitamin for 6 months now. My endocrinologist was concerned with the vitamins when I saw him last month. Once I replied that I take them 4 hours after my Synthroid the worry left his face. He said I was doing it right. I hope that helps your situation.

You do not need a specific diet to lose weight with Hashimoto, you need to get your TSH levels under control with proper medication. Hypothyroidism does not affect your metabolism when you are properly treated. And for hypothyroidism to start affecting seriously your metabolism, you would be seeing other symptoms too, like developing a goiter, being sleepy (as in literally falling asleep in the middle of some activity) etc. Talk to an endocrinologist, there is a ton of pretty much useless and dangerous "information" on the web about specific diets etc for Hasimoto's and pretty much none of them makes any sense. Do not restrict anything, and regarding diet and exercise act as if you never had a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, it does not change anything. Just keep up with your blood checks and dr appintments to readjust meds as needed.
As for meds, the rule is to take your thyroid pills in the morning, on an empty stomach and wait at least 20 minutes before having breakfast. For taking any other meds, supplements etc, you need to ask your dr, because some, like e.g. iron supplements, should be used a few hours later.

To add: I was diagnosed when I was 18, I am 39 now, and honestly, once you adjust to taking your pill daily and the first few months pass, it makes no difference to your life.

A friend of mine has Hashimotos. She has struggled for years. She gave up gluten a few months ago and has lost 15 pounds. I don't know if that is helpful or not... Sorry!
