Deep Fried vs Roasted/Rotisserie Turkey

So while I was doing some research I found some surprising results of deep frying vs roasting. I'm not sure how credible the sources I found were but in most cases deep frying and roasting had close to the same calorie content. I always thought taking one of the healthiest meats available and deep frying it seemed a bit wrong... starting to rethink.

Just a side note: How do you plan to cook your turkey?

I've read the same-that they are close in caloric values-HOWEVER, deep fried almost always equals Trans Fats....

I think if you compare fat v fat the Roasted/Rotisserie would come out the winner...

when you deep fry you add fat

when you roast/rotisserie you use the meats own natural juices to cook and in the process glean off some excess making it healthier

    Roasted/Rotisserie every day...
  • So far what I've read is most turkeys are cooked in peanut oil which is trans fat free and even then very little of the fat absorbs into the turkey. I still prefer to brine and rotisserie my turkey breast but mostly found it interesting how much I actually knew.

    Haha... so true Boss.

it's a slippery slope, most people don't cook it at the right temperature, when you cook in oils, each oil has their own smoke point, go to high and you risk destroying the oil, which really kicks the crap out of the flavor of the bird. Plus it's not very healthy for you at that point.

This must be an American thing...because in my 21+ years in Canada I've never ever heard of or seen anybody try to deep-fry a turkey....

Usually (Not this year) we take our turkey to Popeye's and they fry it for us. Tastes like Popeye's Chicken

I saw on the news the other night that butterball has an electric turkey frier that sits on your counter top. It fries up to a 12 or 14 lb turkey and it has a spout for easy oil draining. I think they said they run around $100. It's much safer. I think if you have the oil hot enough, it won't soak up alot of oil and they recommend peanut oil because it has a higher burning temp.I haven't tried a fried turkey, but hear they're pretty good!

Maybe we're weird, but we always deep fry the turkey outside...can't imagine doing it in the kitchen, seems way more dangerous.

You can also order them from Bojangles if you are in the south  *drool*
