Therapy

Since my insurance kicks in next week, I was seriously considering going to a therapist. I have issues and I usually deal with depression and sadness by focusing on my weight. Losing weight gets to be my main source of happiness and by this being so I become EXTREMELY obsessive. If that scale does not go down my world crumbles. The thing is, I don't want to be like that anymore. Yes, I want to lose weight for physical and mental reasons, but I don't want it to be my world. It's so dangerous. I was down that path before and it was very very dark. So I was wondering if anyone has gone/goes to therapy and has it helped?

as someone in job related to therapy, i can say YES, it does work. i work with children and families who are disfunctional and children who have behavioral and emotional issues. talking to a professional and getting a "different view" of your own thoughts can help someone with depression and other underlying issues. i encourage you to at least try it. if you don't like the therapist you choose originally, switch! find someone you can be comfortable around.

I started therapy a while ago for close to the same reason as you. I highly recommend it. Having someone tell you what they think in a caring manner can help you get to the bottom of a lot of issues. With weight loss and food, often times the issues you deal with aren't even related to food at all..therapy may help you to dig deeper and get to the root of your problems. But I agree, DON'T seek counseling from someone you don't feel comfortable with..no help for you and it's not worth it. Good luck!0

It didn't help because I wasn't ready (and I was in therapy for YEARS). When I WAS ready to really tackle my issues, the book 'Women Food and God' was all the therapy I needed.

I was in therapy for my depression and I can tell you it helped. I am hoping to find a therapist who specializes in eating disorders and weight management so I can work on my relationship with food and myself. That seems to be my biggest hurdle, I see food as the enemy and only feel worth anything if I look a certain way, thanks to the environment that I grew up in. I don't want my girls to grow up that way, so I need to change NOW.
Talking to a therapist, supportive friends, a loved one, anyone who can give you a little advice/insight/support really helps. Good luck!0 -
If this is something that you've been thinking about doing for a while, then I say go for it. What's the harm in giving it a try? And if it makes you feel better, than that's an even better excuse to give it a try.:-) Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
