What To Do When I Feel Like Cheating On My Diet

HELP PLEASE!!!!

Replies

  • I just started my current diet, but in the past when I felt like "cheating", I would go put on the pair of jeans that I want to fit into, or a bathing suit that I want to look great in...and realize I still have some work to do...then I choose a healthy and filling alternative.
I also have realized that once you start letting yourself cheat often, you are more likely to give in to cheating next time. You can do it, girl :] reach that goal weight.
  • I'm going to use this! Thanks! :)

    Indulge a bit...

A cheat meal is okay... just don't let it become an affair.

Well, first off, "diets" don't work. You need to figure out a sustainable way of eating healthy that will work for you long term. And that means figuring out a way to fit in the things that make you happy, within moderation. Best of luck!

Here are a few things to try that work for me:

    1. keep low cal snacks around- raw veggies are the best
    2. something to drink- water, fizzy water, tea, coffee
    3. go for a walk
    4. plan your meals or pre-log your meals
    5. don't break the chain- http://lifehacker.com/281626/jerry-seinfelds-productivity-secret
    6. give yourself a mantra and remind yourself often- I borrowed a mfp friend's - ->Make Every Day Count
    7. reevaluate your plan and see if it's truly sustainable - Are you being too restrictive? Are you looking for fast results? These are recipes for disaster.
    8. Go ahead and eat small bits of the foods you love. Just keep your numbers in check. Plan for it.
    9. Read some success stories
    10. call or chat with a friend

I tend to cheat when I have a sweet tooth craving. To help curb this I always keep frozen fruit in the freezer and munch on a few of those when the craving hits. I keep dark chocolate around as well when I MUST have something.

    9. Read some success stories

That one always does the trick for me.

If you're feeling an overwhelming urge to binge it's very possible that you're hungry. Try to find a calorie deficit level where you are losing steadily (1lb a week is fine; 2 if you have more weight to lose) but you don't feel like you're starving all the time. In general, if you are looking for a loss of more than 2lbs a week you're going to be setting yourself up for failure.

Your nutritional lifestyle is not a relationship. It won't get hurt. It'll still be there waiting for you after you go and have those oreos or those slices of meat lovers' pizza. It'll always be there. UNLIKE that one hypocritical ***** who didn't tell you about that time her ex came to visit while you were away, but when she asks you what your ultimate fantasy is and you say getting her best friend into the act she flips out? Screw that..

    ANYWAY....

If you have to try this hard then it's not sustainable and you need to re-evaluate the measures you're taking. You don't need to be so drastic you are completely depriving yourself of something you love. Everything in moderation.

I agree with this with one exception.. If you are within the first week and have set reasonable goals and calorie counts for the day, it may just be an adjustment period. During that phase, I just yelled out how I WANTED whatever it was I was craving and I popped a piece of Extra gum. Like I said, though, that was the first week (for me) and then I had about figured out my menu and daily eating so I wasn't having those moments. I have treats fit into my day and have had ice cream every night this week without going anywhere close to over on my calories.

If you opened your diary, there may be other suggestions that people could make to help.

What made you motivated to diet in the first place? Consider that. Write it down! Write everything down. And maybe by the time you're done writing, your impulse to eat will have gone away ;)
