Deflated...

I'm 296 lbs and I hadn't weighed myself since starting my weight loss journey this year, however I measured my waist and was pleased I've lost 6cm's. This inspired me to get on the scales only to see I've only lost 4.4lbs :( I feel really deflated now. I've been exercising for 30mins every second day and stayed under 1800 calories? I don't know what I've done wrong? Can anyone help?

How long did it take you to lose those 4.4 pounds and 6 cm? If you started in January, you are actually doing really well!

Nothing that I can see. 4 1/2 lbs in a month and a few days. I'd estimate that to be about a pound a week (If you started January 1, 2014).

    CONGRATULATIONS!!

I'm at about 3/4 of a pound per week, if I look at my global numbers. You're actually losing faster than me. Good job!

Celebrate your success don't look at it as a failure. You are accomplishing what you are here to do - be happy.

The scale isn't the only measure of your success, as you've seen with the tape measure. Congratulations on your success so far! Don't sweat the scale. Seriously.

Don't be deflated. You made progress in a month and that's great. Losing an average of a pound a week is great and not too fast. Slow and steady is much better than rapid. You didn't gain the weight in 30 days, so don't be disappointed you don't lose it in 30 days. Be happy you lost. Keep working hard at it.

Things to think about... Be sure to measure/weigh all food so you're not accidentally eat more calories than realized. Eat back at least some of those exercise calories (a lot of people don't do this and it can actually slow weight loss). If you can, look at eating smaller meals/snacks 5 or 6 times a day versus 2 or 3 big meals. You avoid hunger, keep your body more evenly fueled and teach your body not to hold onto food for later because it learns you will fuel it.

Most importantly... Hang in there and Stick with it. It's a lifestyle permanent change to lose the weight and keep it off. Not a diet. Make sure you can live it for the long term and figure out what works for you. Everyone is different.
  • Thank you everyone!
Seems I'm being too hard on myself. I don't know why I thought it had to be more? I guess I thought of all the biggest loser type programmes and all the ads....
Your positivity has helped, so I will keep going!
    Thanks a lot!!!!!!

Yeah, like the others have said...

You're right on track. Four and a half pounds in a month is a very healthy pace for weight loss. Celebrate this and acknowledge the hard work you've done.

6 cm off your waist? That's 2 inches. In one month, you've lost that.

Here's me.....just a bit over one year, 27 pounds lost, 3 inches off my waist.
  • A lot of my weight is around my stomach though, so I think that's why it changed quickly?

Well then, rejoice in that change!! Your body is changing right on schedule. Your mind just hasn't caught up yet. Or is trying to push you beyond your schedule. Take it slowly. There's no rush. Slower is healthier. And will be more likely to be a permanent change for yourself, rather that the old up-down-up-down.
