Lack of weight loss - please help!!

I embarked on a diet 4 weeks ago using MyFitnessPal. I put in my height and current weight. I have a desk job and don’t exercise. MFP calculated I am allowed 1200 calories per day. I have recorded everything I have eaten, and give or take ~50 calories on occasions, I have kept to the 1200 calories a day. According to MFP if I carry on like this I should be approximately 10lbs lighter after 5 weeks (a loss of 2lbs per week). At week 3, I decided to weigh myself. I appeared to have lost ~4 lbs. Not quite what I was hoping for but still 4lbs, so I was still encouraged. One week later (this morning), I weighted myself again and the scales say I am 2 ¾ lbs heavier!! I’m sure that I am not heavier but am possibly retaining fluid but nevertheless I expected the scales to at least register the same as last week. What am I doing wrong? I feel very despondent today

1. It's hard to say without knowing anything about you. What is your starting weight?
2. What are you eating?
3. Are you getting exercise in?
4. What did you tell MFP you want to lose? I get 1570 a day to lose 1.5 a week, and I have a desk job as well. 1200 seems awfully low for what your page says you have to lose.
5. Your weight fluctuates. For the first month I was doing this I didn't step on a scale because it would've drove me crazy. After a month of diet and exercise, I was down 20 pounds.
If you weigh yourself:
Do it at the same time every day.
Consider if you've had anything high in water or sodium.
Consider if you've relieved yourself recently.
It all factors in.0 -
At 40lbs to lose 2lbs a week is too fast...that is for folks with over 100lbs to lose.
As for you inital loss yes that will happen you have restricted your intake and have lost a lot of water weight and some of it has come back...
Change your weight loss goals to 1lb a week...eat some food...and expect ups and downs. It happens weight loss is not linear.
ensure you are weighing your food to ensure correct logging. Last but not least don't be a slave to the scale.0 -
Thanks for your replies. To clarify I am 5’10” and weighed 14stone 4lb on the onset of my diet. Ideally I think I would like to lose 40lbs. I don’t have a dedicated date to lose this as long as I keep losing each week until I either reach my goal weight or I am happy with my size. I should add that, due to my height, I am lucky in that I can carry my weight quite well. That said I want to be a comfortable size 14 instead of my current tight size 16!!
If I change my goal to lose 1LB per week instead of 2LB my calorie allowance is 260 more! Can’t get my head round that but I will give it a go and see what happens.

Is there a reason why you're not exercising?0

If you only got an extra 260 going from 2lb to 1lb a week it probably just gave you 1200 as the lowest advisable calorie goal so you were not really eating at a rate to lose 2lbs a week. Just remember, it's much easier to lose slowly by making sustainable changes.
I also can't recommend exercise enough, even if it's just adding 15-30 minutes of walking a day. You may be able to eat a little more and still lose.0 -
I don't exercise because I hate it!! Nothing more than that.0

Do you have lots of water, fresh fruit and veggies in the 1200 calories?0

If all you are concern with is losing the weight you don't have to exercise...the calorie deficet will do that.0 -
You haven't been at this very long and the weight "gain" is water. Saturday I weighed 165, Sunday was the Super Bowl so I ate chips and dips and drank Twisted Teas (lots of em). Monday I weighed 171, I don't think I ate enough to gain 6 pounds. I'm drinking lots of water now to flush out the water retained by eating all those sodium based foods and today my weight is 169. This is what happens when you weigh your self everday - Up, then down, then back up... Don't panic at 1200 a day - you will lose. Good luck to ya!:flowerforyou:0

we all 'hated' exercise at one point but honestly if you just try to walk for 15 mins even a day and then increase it you WILL reap the benefits in SOOo many ways
We're not talking going to the gym, just walking, just get moving and believe me those pounds will come off steadily.0 -
I hated exercise too until I just made myself do it. You can lose weight without it, but you will feel better and be able to eat more if you do something active each day. I encourage you to challenge yourself to do something every day for at least 15 minutes. You'll see a difference not only in your body, but your mood and your stress level.0

A four pound loss in 3 weeks is 1 1/3 pounds a week. Considering the amount you are trying to lose and the fact that you refuse exercise, I think that's pretty good.
Even if you hate most forms of exercise, couldn't you at least plan in a walk now and then? Its not really necessary to lose weight, but it will help your overall health, and allow you a bit more wiggle room in the area of food.0 -

You can lose weight with diet alone, but eventually your metabolism will catch up to you and if you stop tracking your food every day the lbs will come back twice as fast as you lost them. Diets are a good quick fix but for lasting results you need to change your lifestyle.0 -
I would suggest trying a diet that will trick your body into losing weight rather than just running a calorie deficiency... like the 17 day diet. I have issues with weight loss also. I could be training for a marathon and running a calorie deficit each day and the scale will not budge even after several months. I have to really be focused on WHAT I am eating.
I have never heard someone with a bad experience on the 17 day diet. Eat as much lean protein and low glycemic vegetables as you can, but limit yourself to 2 servings of low glycemic fruit, 2 servings of healthy fats and 2 servings of probiotics (I do greek yogurt and sauerkraut). And the only exercise you have to do is go for a 17 minute walk. You should see results within 3 days. After 17 days if you still have more to lose, there's a 2nd and 3rd stage of the diet. Stage 4 is maintenance where you follow the guidelines of phase 3 during the week, but on the weekend you can indulge more. The book is pretty cheap too, I got mine on amazon for 20 bucks.
Good luck!0 -
You hate exercise now, but how much would you hate working hard to lose weight and then just gaining it back? I agree with the poster who said 15 minute walks can be a great start. You can lose weight by diet alone, but I think exercise makes it easier.
Strength training can really help jump start your metabolism. Even starting out just doing some basic moves at home with small hand weights (in a pinch while I've been visiting family I've even used gallon jugs of water or large cans) can be a good start. Strength training will help to ensure you're building and maintaining muscle and losing fat. Otherwise, some of the weight you lose could be lean muscle mass.0
