Milk as a post-workout drink?

So I've read a lot of good things about milk (especially chocolate milk) being a great post-workout drink. I just started working out, and since my mom religiously insists that I drink milk almost every day (I'm 18 and I live with my mom and fam so yeah lol), I'm thinking about drinking a glass of milk after workouts. But the thing is, I've also heard that you only *really* need post-workout drinks and whatever if you're in a very intense exercise regimen and you want to build up lots of muscle. I don't fit into that category. I'm kind of "skinny fat" so I'm looking to lose fat and get toned. Is it still a good idea for me to have a glass of milk post-workout?

    Milk is fine post workout....
A good meal would be better.

If you are hitting weights and having a good workout, then I would do a meal that is high in carbs and protein.....lower in fat.

But skim milk along w/ some chocolate syrup, sounds good to me.

My post workout meal is usually along the line of chicken breast and rice or sweet potato along with veggies.

If you're going to be drinking milk every day anyway, why not have it after your workout? Makes sense to me.

I think chocolate milk is mostly for high endurance athletes due to high carb and high protein content. We always have some in our fridge for our 13 year old son (who is in travel soccer and practices 3 time a week with 2 games on the weekends).

Having good carb content is also very good post lifting, especially if you have done some heavy lifting and exhausted glycogen stores.....
Studies show that carb uptake by the body is best within 2 - 3 hrs post workout....
and then the body will take it up at a slower rate beyond that window.....

so if you are lifting....good carbs and some protein is what you want.

    also depending on goals.

One other thing I will say about protein in milk is that is actually has a pretty decent split of whey and casein

So I think 80/20 split......80% casein (slow digesting protein)
    20% whey (fast digesting)

My son is going to be pissed to open the fridge and find that I drank all of his chocolate milk.

I have 3 teenage girls... keeping chocolate milk in the fridge is like telling a homeless person to leave that hundred dollar bill on the ground! NEVER GONNA HAPPEN!! lol!

dang, it... And I love milk... but only skim and only with cereal... I guess I'm weird.

I have a protein shake with Almond Milk after my workouts, and first thing in the morning when I wake up. I do love dairy milk, but I have rosacea on my face, and it's a huge trigger for me, so I've been trying to cut out dairy milk from my everyday foods.

I always drink milk after a workout. I crave it like nothing else. I almost always get home and down a big glass then actually eat something about 15 minutes later.

I haven't tried almond milk yet...

But I have started doing unsweetened coconut milk.....on days when I am working on lower carbs....
    And it tastes ok....
I may give almond milk a try....
  • I usually have milk mixed with some protein powder before and after a workout.

I usually just eat a full meal within 2hrs of finishing my workout. Smash a few chicken breasts or nice rump steak onto the George Foreman, micro some brown rice/quinoa/lentils and a steam bag of veggies... good to go with a shake of hot sauce.
    Milk and cookies later.

I don't really bother with drinks or shakes, they don't do anything for the raging hunger I have once I've finished lifting.

I sometimes have a drink or shake before/during workouts if I haven't eaten much prior to lifting, but I'm always really hungry after even if I've done that.
  • Thanks for the input, everyone. My goal isn't to bulk up, though, will drinking milk still help me?

What IS your goal? Your profile page doesn't tell us very much other than you're an 18 year old female.

"toned" doesn't really mean much - in effect you want to replace fat with muscle so that you take up less space. A glass of milk a day is certainly compatible with that.

Are you over-thinking this, perhaps? Is there a different issue at play with the milk?

    Yes of course....

Look at me, I am definitely not bulky....and have been lifting weights for almost 20 yrs now.
    Kinda wish I were.....

So if milk were the silver bullet to get bulky, then ya, I would be on stage competing

Interesting. I used to go to a Sunday aerobics class and would have serious cravings for whole milk straight afterwards. That and bananas.

Unfortunately, can't comment on whether it was any good for me (or you!)

Good thing I'm a small child- so I qualify for drinking milk!!!

    milk is great.

I use it post workout- scoop of protein- way better than protein+ water. That *kitten* is nasty.

Milk is a great gainer in copious amounts- I personally use more ice cream because I get sick drinking so much milk- but it's great.

Go on- have at it- it's a great source of protein.
