muy thai/kickboxing

I did my first muy thai / kickboxing class last night and it was brutal we started with a 30 minute cardio session of doing ab work jumping rope in inervals then running around the room and doing punches that was followed by an hour and 15 minutes of hitting the heavy bags and the mits. Needless to say I almost died. My body hurts like it hasn't after a work out in over 10 years. It was pure exhaustion. My question is does anyone else do any of this sort of activities for work out and how it has worked for you. Also I have no clue how to document the amount of calories burned. When I put it in to mfp it said I should have burned about 1900 calories which seems high to me but not sure.

I did Taekwondo - in Colorado, where there's hardly any air already! lol - for five years. It's cardio-intensive as well, so I feel your pain. After my first class, I literally had to crawl up the stairs to my apartment. My legs wouldn't hold me.

    It gets easier!

It's also amazing for burning calories. If you did 2 hours, it's POSSIBLE you actually burned that much, if you went all out the whole time, but you may want to invest in a HRM to know for sure, because MFP likes to estimate high.

Edit to add that during the 5 years I did it, I was in the best shape of my life, training 3 days a week.

Walking into my local gym for the first time was the best thing I've ever done for myself. Muay Thai is incredible. Chin down, hands up and keep showing up! If your gym has Brazilian jiu jitsu (a lot of them do), you might want to give that a shot as well. It's a different kind of pain and misery, but just as intense and you show up to work with fewer bruises and shiners lol.
  • Last Monday, I went to my first class at Title Boxing Club...it was HELL! I thought I was dying! I did 6 days in a row and took Sunday off!! I have to say by the 4th day I was feeling a lot better and the pain eased up!

I wear a HRM and my class is 15 min. of running/jump rope/suicides squats...etc. 30 min. of hard hitting boxing and then 15 min. of ab work/planking etc....I usually burn between 550-650. Keep in mind..I am just starting out!!

Don't give up...it's totally worth it and I swear I can already feel my body changing!! :)

Yea the gym I started going to offers all different aspects of MMA I just decided to go to this day because of the cardio class they start with before hand. I really enjoyed it and play to broaden my horizons with it but I want to get the hang of this one first.

It burns calories similar to circuit training (to answer the question of how you might calculate the calorie burn).

It burns a ton of calories. Maybe not 1900, but a ton.

I learned Muay Thai a long time ago to avenge my brother's paralysis at the hands of a drug dealing kickboxer. I've since retired and just run now.

Idid muay thai for a while, but it tore my body up too much.
Also I really hated all the gros ssweaty grappling/clinching.

I did two 90 minute sessions a week. It didn't contribute significantly to weight loss.
