I usually do cardio but want to start strength training. Any tips or exercises I should start with?

I am NO expert, so instead I'll tell you what I do:
The following with weights:
Lunges (front and back)
Squats
Bicep curls
Tricep extensions
Front Raises (with straight arms)
I also do crunches, planks, leg raises and sit-ups to work out my ab/core.
I do a couple of sets of 10 reps almost every day.0 -
Go online and download Stronglifts 5x5.
It's a great place to start.0 -
Look into an established program.
New rules of lifting (any of series)
Stronglifts 5x5
Starting Strength
Blaha 5x5
Allpro
Strong Curves
Nia Shanks' programs.
My suggestion in Stronglifts.
Its simple to understand.
Takes like 40 min.
Its effective.
Hits the entire body 3x a week.0 -
Thank you0

I would suggest reading up on it first.0 -
The starting weights are set for men in the app. You probably will need to start lower. But as suggested you should read the site/pdf also there is a group on here called stronglifts 5x5 for women and they should be able to help a lot.0

Many people recommend using a broomstick or standard bar, at first, to practice form before adding weights. I started with Starting Strength after Christmas and was able to begin squatting with the Olympic bar, but could only bench press and Overhead press a standard bar with a little weight added. I'm now at 85 lb. squats, 55 lb. bench, and 55 lb. OHP, and that's me proceeding with extreme caution. So, you gain strength (and confidence) quickly.
So far, I LOVE lifting! I hope you do, too!0 -
Thank you all!!!0

Also, its great that you're starting this now at the beginning.
Itll help you retain lean body mass (lbm) and I believe it helps with loose skin a bit for those with lots to lose (I could be wrong, someone please correct me if I am).
Retaining lbm is a good thing because youll jiggle less as you lose weight. And it means more food.0
