Shin Splints

What causes them? Anyway to completely get rid of them?

I have been going to the gym 5 days a week since the beginning of January, and occasionally get shin splints to the point when I get of the treadmill, I am limping terribly. They usually go away when I get on the bike and use them because it seems to take the load off of the lower half of my legs.

This doesn't happen every time I run, just a select few times. I warm up around 30 minutes before jogging too.

For me, it was wearing the wrong shoes. Also doing too much too soon can be the problem.

For me it was not actually my shins at all, but rather tight soleus, tight achilles, tight plantar fascia (if one was tight--it caused a chain reaction for me). Once I released the soleus (deep tissue massage), and stretched the rest out? Pain is gone....and this has plagued me for most of my life!

ETA: it felt like my shins were on fire and ached horribly....but the pain would subside after I stopped running. This indicated to me that it wasn't the shins....
