How did I gain 4 pounds overnight?

When I weighed myself this morning the scale said I gained 4 pounds since weighing at the same time yesterday. The only difference between yesterday and a normal day for me was that I had to work so I worked out later and was unable to drink as much water but other than that everything was the same. I may have even eaten less calories than normal and was pretty active at work. How did this happen?

I am terrible for weighing everyday, but we shouldn't really. I had a similar experience this morning and you need to try to keep in mind that you haven't really put on 4lbs over night! I bet if you weigh yourself tomorrow you will see a completely different number. And if you weigh in a weeks time it will be drastically different! Try to stay positive and don't let the daily fluctuations get your down, if you insist (like me!) on weighing everyday!

I was so cross this morning! ha ha! But its not a real gain! Wait a day or two!

    Hope this helps!
  • Drinking less and doing more can cause your body to retain water. It will normalize in a few days.

Did you eat food and not poop yesterday?

If the day to day fluctuation in weight is going to worry you, I suggest weighing less often.

    It's water weight.

Think of it this way...... in order to gain a lb of TRUE fat you need an extra 3,500 calories.

If you say you gained 4 pounds, did you consume an extra 14,000 calories? I HIGHLY doubt it.

this happens often... I weigh myself same time everyday wearing the same thing with the scale in the same location and I use two different scales, but I only count my official weight once a week - every Saturday morning. The days in between don't count because there is so much fluctuation depending on time of the month, water intake, etc. Don't fret about it!

water retention...also, maybe you need to take a dump. weight loss isn't linear, it is a general trend over time...just as your weight maintenance will not be static, but rather a range of about 5 Lbs or so.

    This.

Also salt. Especially if you're sodium-sensitive, the effect can be even more dramatic.

lol, I can go up 10lbs from day to day. Don't worry about it. I weighed myself last night and was 225, I weigh myself in the morning and I'm 214. Fluctuates all the time... I put no stock in it. Once weekly (real weigh in), always same time of day.

You didn't. This is why I don't understand why people weigh themselves daily...they get obsessed with the fluctuations.
  • Being a woman, a lot of it has to do with your "cycle". The same thing happens to me. Drink lots of water, and like everyone else is saying- be patient.

Didn't you know that the more frequently you weigh yourself the more weight you gain over a short period because of giving your mind set something to think about regarding weight? Everyone in broscience knows that!
