How come everyone tells me how great I look but all I see is fat? I am trying really hard to be positive but I still can't look at myself in a mirror?

Because you're pretty normal. I think it's hard for a lot of people to see the changes in themselves right away. Take lots of photos - maybe even use one of the tracking apps like BodyLog or something. You don't have to show the photos to anyone else but it will help in seeing the changes in yourself that others are seeing.

I know that I have not lost as much as you have, Way to go BTW. I too am hearing that I am looking better. I don't see it either, but I think it is a matter of that I have been so over weight for so long that I keep seeing that person in the mirror. I hope with time you will see what everyone else is seeing. Remember to be proud of who you are and that you have come so far. Keep it up and maybe post before and after pictures on here so everyone can help you see what everyone else is seeing. But like I said I'm just starting on my journey and you are 78 lbs ahead of me. :) YOU GO GIRL!!!

I'm having the same problem myself. Yesterday I put on a pair of cargo pants that fit loosely with a t shirt. So far so good - feeling comfortable with my lower weight. Then I went to the hairdressers and cringed when I saw myself in the mirror. Suddenly the loose fitting pants didn't look as good as I thought they had. I felt as if my face looked the size of a pumpkin and my upper body looked enormous, even though I was wearing a medium sized t shirt.

And then I came home and everyone was telling me how good I now looked.

Obviously when I look into a mirror it must look like one of those distorted fun house ones.

A lot of people think that if they lose weight they will suddenly be happy. That's not the case. We're usually still the same person inside with all the same hurts and fears. It's hard on so many levels.

You might look up books by Geneen Roth or Frances Kuffel.

I look in the mirror and I see fat. But I also look at women that are bigger than me and I see beauty, not fat. Our brains seem to take longer to catch up with out waist lines.

But, you know, I don't think out society encourages women to feel beautiful. We supposed to dislike ourselves. If we actually think we're pretty, we're full of ourselves, right? We're damned if we do, damned if we don't.

Sorry for the ramble. My point is that we all struggle. You're not alone.

I think for me, I had gotten bigger than I had let myself realize. In my head, I felt like 180 when I was really 225. So it wasn't until I started losing weight that I started to really look at my body. So I wasn't really looking better than I thought I had looked until under 180. Now I feel and look smaller than that and I am still surprised every time I look in the mirror. Every day my body feels smaller than I think it should.

amazing. But it took me getting smaller than I was visualizing myself before I really felt smaller. Now I can't wait to see how the next 10lbs change me.
  • I have a side by side picture as my profile picture.. Yes, I see it there but not in the mirror. Sometimes thats just how it is until you get an eye opener or get used to it :)

Yeah, pretty normal phenomenon! Sometimes you feel good, you know what you have been doing is working but for me sometimes I get dressed, nothing fits right and I feel sloppy and for me that makes me feel like I don't look that great. I think being that we still have a ways to go also plays a part in the games our mind plays with us. We may feel that we can't look great because we have so far to go.
  • I feel bad for you and I wish you didn't feel that way :( I'm sure you look great. I feel the same way! I feel like everyone I know could tell me I'm beautiful and I would still look in the mirror and see a fat monster.

I try my best not to think negative thoughts! I'm sure your journey is working and you will start to see yourself the way others see you! Best of luck dear.

yeah, I couldn't tell it by the mirror either for a while. But it was easier to get in tight corners, and my clothes were getting baggy. And the scale was showing a loss.
Hang in there. You are doing really well!

Because you haven't learned to love yourself yet. You are a worthwhile human being no matter what your weight, but as someone who has persevered and worked hard to lose a lot of weight, you have so much to be proud of.

What would you say to a stranger in your position? You'd probably tell them how awesome they were for getting this far and then you'd point out how much change they've made and finally you'd encourage them to keep going for the goal. And you'd be telling the truth!

Try to do the same for yourself. You deserve the same respect that any one of us does! And none of us is ever going to be perfect. Just try to be the best version of you that you can be, but don't forget to be patient and kind to yourself.
  • I was the same way. I was in denial about my successes. I knew in my head I was doing well, but I couldn't convince myself. People would mention how my clothes were loser and that I needed to get new clothes, and I refused. When I did, I just got the next size down because there was "no way" I needed anything smaller. We tell ourselves that we didn't do it, when we clearly did. It's really weird. You've done it. Take pictures, get a measuring tape, you'll see they're right. Tell yourself every day when you wake up you're doing great, you are so proud of your accomplishments, and you'll start to believe yourself.
