Can I really undo years worth of unhealthy eating?

I'm 18 and really worried that I'm gonna get diseases at a young age that people only get when they're older. Like vascular stuff such as plaque build up and blah blah all that junk, even heart attacks. The reason Is because when I was about 10-13 I ate so much fat and junk food it's unbelievable. And this summer all I ate was chocolate. I now have a healthy diet and exercise, but I feel like I have all these things a young person shouldn't have. And of course doctors don't help because as soon as they look at my age they kick me out of their office for being ridiculous. I've never been overweight or anything like that. Please tell me something to calm my mind. Am I over reacting?

The odds of you having a life threatening heart disease at 19 years old because of a few years of bad eating habits in really really low. So yes, you are overreacting.

    I second the overreacting.

Relax. You're probably fine. Just go forward with better choices and reap the benefits.
  • Hey, I am hypochondriac too lol! Yes, I tend to worry so much that I go overboard with my eating habbits. I would not allow myself any suger, processed foods, or bad carbs. I only ate healthy for years! I worried about getting everything under the sun! You will be ok, I promise. Just eat smart and focus on your thoughts. Make sure you are making a concious effort to positive thinking! :)

You are overreacting but this is all mentality. Once and if you change your ways you will naturally think differently anyway...

Have you never heard of the term kid in a candy store? Anyone who never had dietary indiscretions as a kid needs to get the heck out  I kid. But still, relax, okay?! :)
  • Contrary to what diet culture might have you believe, processed foods are actually preferable in terms of digestion and ease of energy conversion- so the fact that you ate "a lot" of this kind of food growing up clearly indicates you were literally growing. Even now, unless you have a disease/allergy/condition where a certain food could result in complications (i.e. sugar for a diabetic), you wouldn't benefit from a restrictive diet. If you want to be healthy, it's all about honoring your hunger cues. So expose yourself a wide spectrum of foods- and remember it's okay to want chocolate cake, and sometimes, you might want a big salad. There's absolutely no reason to be concerned about lifelong health issues because of what you've chosen to eat in the past! It's all just energy!

If you have heart issues at your age, either you're morbidly obese, it's a physical/genetic defect, or you've been doing drugs religiously for a while. Only one of those would have anything to do with your diet. I'm presuming you're neither 1) nor 3).

If you don't have concrete symptoms, then yes, it's all in your head.

If you do, it could still be in your head, but you need to find out. Forget any thought that your diet caused it and make your doc listen to you. He/she should explain why you have whatever symptom to your satisfaction.

Yeah. You're 18. You're not even done baking yet. Get back in the oven. You can undo just about anything at this point.
