How to log foreign food?

Right now, I'm studying abroad in Thailand. I've gained about 17 pounds over the past 5 months, and it looks awful on my short frame.
My biggest issue is not ever knowing what on earth I'm eating. I try to make healthy decisions, but the food is so foreign that most of the time I have no idea what a healthy decision would even be. It doesn't help that almost everything is deep fried.
Does anyone know anything about logging foreign food or about making healthy choices in a country where all of the food is made of who knows what?

    Find out the name of what your eating. Always try to learn the name of a particular dish, drink, fruit, meat, vegetable, dessert that you are eating taking into consideration the various versions (in terms of how it is prepared.) The name is important. Once you have a name google it. For a particular dish or drink find what it is comprised of ie rice noodles, curry, fish sauce, coconut milk and the spices and use that as a starting point. Hope this helps.
