Too much protein - is it bad?

Hello - I have a quick question. When I'm tracking my food I notice I always go over on protein by 10 grams. I was always taught that protein is something you need and in this case I was wondering if going over only in protein is bad? Sounds like a newb question but I wanted to ask.

What percentage is your protein set at? Many people follow a 40/40/20 carb/protein/fat ratio. I know that MFP sets protein a little low. But no, too much protein is not bad! Your muscles need protein.0

don't worry too much about protein, it's just sauces etc. that you put on meat that you have to watch
or change the kind of protein so it's more healthy but your body does need protein to build muscle0 -
I don't think its bad but try to mix it up a little bit. One of my bosses got this advise from one of the trainers at Curves. Go three days heavy on protein then go three days light on it and your body will burn more because it got use to the protein now your are low on it and your body isn't use to it.
Going over is something I do all the time. I am always going over my suger and I can have a egg, a banana, and coffee so I would just try to make sure that your are making healthy choice for food and I think that you should be fine.0 -
10 grams is not all that much to go over. I think the ratio here is for the most part a bit higher for your complex carbs (veggies and grains) which as a nutritionist I believe is the better deal. Let's face it, there is such a thing as protein poisoning but there isn't such a things as carbohydrate poisoning. Another reason you want to lower your protein a bit is generally speaking, it's much higher in calories then the healthy carbs. I'm so glad the day of the high protein diets is behind us. I never backed them. 10 grams, not to worry.0

Just a FYI. There is such a thing as too much protein.
Never eat more than 3g per 1lb of lean body mass. If you are eating tons of protein drink TONS of water. To much protein can lead to kidney failure.
ALTHOUGH 10g over is not to much.

right, 10 grams isn't an issue. prolonged, very high protein consumption (say in the 40 to 50% range for many months to years) can cause issues with your liver and kidneys (sometimes), but generally it takes a long time for this to become an issue.0

I agree with the above post. I've done a ton of research on protein and nutrition, A high protein diet is common within a fat burning nutrition plan, example P90x phase 1 nutrition 50% protein, 30% carbohydrates and 20% fat. With a consistent and challenging workout you should shred the fat and reach your body fat % goals within a matter of months, not years, certainly long before the threat of any organ damage.
The next phase of your nutrition will be much more balanced 40% protein, 40% carbohydrates and 20% fat
The balance of carbs and protein will eliminate the chance of any organ damage.

for the record I don't believe a 40% protein diet is balanced, I feel it's far to high for an average person doing about an hour of moderate exercise.0
