Hello, I've been dieting for years now. Nothing ever seems to work, so I'm hoping some prolonged motivation may appear on here.

    Welcome EllyWelly07!

I'm new myself, but from what I've heard, this is a great place to start. I love the ability of being able to track everything. :D

Good luck with your weight loss!

Stop dieting. Start eating to be healthy rather than depriving yourself, because depriving yourself never lasts. Mainly because depriving yourself sucks. Stick around. Play with your settings and goals. Learn what works for you. Learn what works for everyone else. You'll be a pro at this before you know it.

I'd start with the suggested readings on this page:
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/833026-important-posts-to-read

And in particular, the first one listed:
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819925-the-basics-don-t-complicate-it

By the way: "diet" has two meanings in contemporary English: a temporary food plan aimed at losing weight (e.g., Atkins Diet, Grapefruit Diet) and a long-term pattern of eating (Mediterranean diet, vegan diet, meat-and-three-veg diet). I think the word is OK if you think of it in the second sense, but not the first. If you think of "dieting" as "depriving yourself temporarily," you're likely to gain back anything you lose. If you think of having a healthy diet, i.e. a sustainable long-term way of eating that doesn't lead to weight gain, you're much more likely to succeed.
