Water intake

I've always had this doubt about what drinking "water" is supposed to mean.
So, it's recommended to drink 8 cups of water every day but is that supposed to be just water or any other kind of drink is fine too?
There's have being many many years without me drinking water at all. I drink almost a liter of milk a day and drink around 3 cups of tea with my meals. I also have a cup or two of calorie free soda after my exercises. Do those count as "water intake" or not?

I've always heard take your weight and divide it by 2. That is how many ounces of water you should have each day. Soda, tea & milk do not count as water. Sorry! I did not care for water for a few years, but after a month or so of making myself drink it I started to really like it. I now exceed the water requirements most days. Hope this helps! Good luck!

i've been lagging on my water intake for the last three months. i bet that has something to do with the pace of my weight loss here recently. this post has reminded me. that surely i need to step it up.

Personally, I do not count them as water intake if it is from soda, tea, orange juice etc. Ive also read that caffeine makes you lose water. I like to drink 8 cups of pure water per day. Honestly, Ive never felt better since drinking 2L+ of pure water.

    Not really, no...

Ultimately, those things may tax the body more than cleanse it. That's what water is for...you know, all those stupid cleanses that people pay a fortune for...good old water does the same thing.

Ultimately, it is most important to stay hydrated...but really, water is best and srsly...it's not that hard. Water is the medium for various enzymatic & chemical reactions in the body. It moves nutrients, hormones, antibodies, & oxygen through the blood stream & lymphatic system. The proteins & enzymes of the body function more efficiently in solutions of lower viscosity. Water is the solvent of the body & it regulates all functions, including the activity of everything it dissolves & circulates.
  • Thank you for your reply! Though it's really bad news... I really hate to drink (anything) when I'm not thirsty... (it makes me want to throw up) I guess I will have to change the tea and soda for plain water so I have my "water intake" right...

Water is water.. nothing else is water

I drink 3 cups of tea and 3 or 4 cups of coffee everyday too

I drink a lot more then 8 cups of water, because the tea and coffee actually make me more thirsty.

it's not that hard.. fill a sports bottle and carry it with you all day.. I end up filling mine 4-5 times a day without a problem.

Advice: Learn the short cuts to the bathroom lol

Thank you! That was very informative. I couldn't understand why other drinks that were made with water themselves didn't count. Now I get it.
I don't have any problem with water... is just a question of habits... I'll just try to change them...

I have been drinking my weight divided by two all of this week and I am finding it easier and easier. I have never been a water drinker, I am 23 now and the most I have every drunk is probably 2 pints a week. Now I am on 2600(ish)ml a day. I feel great!

I would never drink full sugar pop or anything like that but drinking a 2 litre of Pepsi Max a day wasn't a problem. All of that rubbish has stopped now - can't say the same for needing the toilet though :-)

People does flavoured water count? I drink at least one litre bottle a night at work, should I not be!

I have always heard 8 ounces of water and took it to mean pure water. I joined weight watchers back in 2008 and they said water is anything sugar free and caffeine free. So, my husband and I count water, crystal light, unsweet decaf tea all as water. I think it would be ideal to have 8 ounces of pure water, but some just struggle getting it down the hatch. LOL
  • Drink a cup in the morning before your coffee and a cup after dinner. In between, drink whenever you are thirsty or after a meal.

    You get what?
Your body can't discern whether the water came from food, tea, soda or coffee.
Just stay hydrated with whatever drinks you like.

Here's a study that shows that tea is just as hydrating as plain water:
