Not enough calories?

I find myself extremely frustrated. I have spent about the last 2 weeks really making an effort to stay below my calorie goal or not go crazy over it (I was eating between 1500 and 1700 calories a day) I got on the scale and I was a pound heavier than when I started. I haven't kept track of my calories since Thursday and I weigh myself this morning and I lost 1.2 which is all I've lost. I'm thinking possibly I'm not consuming ENOUGH calories, so I switch to 1 lb a week which gives me 2000 some calories a day. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions....I'm really not happy at this point. As far as working out...I've been moving A LOT more than usual...

Believe it or not, you are right. When combining exercise with "dieting" we really should be packing on more calories. I eat between 2200 and 2800 a day depending on my workout and I lose just fine. Strict calorie restriction will often have the opposite of the desired affect.

The working out could actually be the cause of your weight gain. When you start exercising more or start a new and different exercise program, it is normal for your muscles to retain more water to help repair themselves. Don't worry, it's only temporary. Once your muscles become accustomed to your more active lifestyle, they won't need to hold on to the extra water, and the temporaryweight gain will quickly disappear. Hope this helps explain it.

I had the same problem! I then realized i was at a plateau and just stopped obsessing so much. I only eat around 1200 calories but everyone was telling me thats too low. I do this so I can give myself a cheat meal a week. I did however try to up my calorie intake and it was hard for me to do because I eat the same things everyday so i can stay on budget. You just have to do what works for you. I found what has worked for some people dosen't mean it will work for me. I also stopped weighing myself everyday. I weigh myself once a week and that helps me! My advice to you is just exercise more, if you are still hungary then up your calories a little. I wish you luck :)
  • you're right - just make sure the foods you are eating are healthy foods.

also, how often are you eating - don't pack all the calories into one or two big meals, eat throughout the day - I'm a fan of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a couple snacks in between that way I'm always eating, always keeping my metabolism going - it might not work for you - find what works for you!
  • Hey guys! Thanks for the responses.

I don't pack all my calories into one meal, and I do eat healthy throughout the day. I'm pretty convinced it's not enough...so I'm going to up my calories and see what happens :)
  • Jessie....I think I am in the same boat as you...frustrated and not loosing!! I also think I may not be getting enough calories...Did you increase your calories and did that help?
  • I'm bumping this, because I too am frustrated with not eating enough calories. I currently eat 3 meals a day, with 2 snacks, and dinner being half the size of my other meals (per trainer instructions), and about 70 oz. of water. Each day I have about a 200-300 or more calorie deficit and I suspect this is why I'm not losing as much as I'd like.

I suppose the best course of action would be to work on getting more calories in at the beginning/ middle of the day so I can keep my dinner portions small.

Has anyone successfully remedied the habit of not taking in enough calories? Did you see more favorable results?

Does filling the deficit with calories from peanut butter work?
