I'm trying to do the best i can, but when my vote means very little in the house we end up with junk food. The kind of foods that literally make me sick, and sometimes i feel like im silently being mocked for trying to be healthy in my own home. The other day i went on a small rampage about the food in the house and how it was going to kill us. (im hypoglycemic and my mom is diabetic) Her check recently got garnished, so we are living really tight and i understand that, but we can still do things better. If i tell them im sick because of the food, they just dont care. I'm high risk for heart attack or stroke, and that kind of matters to me. I just dont understand how they dont care about themselves either.
It feels like im trying to push a brick wall or something.

I feel bad for you, been in this type of situation before.
Does she not get that she's fast tracking her own demise by ignoring her dietary needs ESPECIALLY as a diabetic?
Protein isn't expensive. Vegetables aren't expensive. Rice & Pasta is not that expensive.
You can Google & search around some very cheap meal plans & snack ideas. It's all about getting the best bang for your buck.

Making meals that stretch & foods that keep you fuller, longer.
I really hope you can snap her out of her mindset and maybe start to slowly turn things around.

get a job
move out
feed yourself.
otherwise find a way to help around the house- go food shopping- offer to help cook.
you can't just complain about stuff and not be a part of the solution- force the issue.0 -
Not to be rude, but I think if you rant at your family and try to change their habits along with your own, you WILL be talking to a brick wall. People have to make those decisions for themselves. Period.
I am sincerely sorry to hear about your family's financial struggles. I do not know what your situation is, but is it possible for you to get a part-time job and buy some healthy foods to stash away for your own consumption?0 -

You can't change other people, only yourself. Moving out may not be a bad idea.
Ranting certainly isn't going to help, family changes generally happen through planning, and even then it often takes baby steps, rather than drastic overhauls.
Start doing some research and comparison shopping. If you can find cheaper alternatives to what is in the house now, they might be more willing to try.
Is there a food bank in your area that offers produce? Is your family eligible for SNAP? Do you have space to grow some vegetables, even if it is in a planter? Is there a community garden in your area?
Eggs, beans and rice tend to be the cheapest items in the store: find a recipe that looks appealing and make dinner for the family.0 -
Have you offered to shop and cook for your family? Sometimes they just need to be shown that there is another way. If you can bring home a huge amount of food and make a great dinner with little cost they may start to get the picture.0

My family ate sort of crappy too. I believe almost anything is fine in moderation. I would not recommend going extreme..(organic vegetarian) just b/c you already just have a big enough battle getting to normal.
Why not get a paper route or something so you can go out and buy a bag apples or a box of protein bars / vitamins to supplement your life? Everybody seems to go the all or nothing route that sets them up for failure. Baby steps. Think baby steps.
Not much you can do until you move out.0
