MFP creates a calorie goal for you. It's a calorie deficit that does not take into account any exercise. When you exercise you burn calories and create a bigger deficit. You should eat what you burn to reach that calorie goal. For example, your calorie goal is 1600 calories. You work out and burn 300 calories. Without eating those 300 calories your body is now at 1300 net calories. Eat them and you can have 1900 calories, which is pretty cool. Eat more and still lose weight.

It's adding my exercise and food and giving me my net from that. I use a fitbit and think it may be messing with it somehow?

It must be showing your food calories subtracting exercises calories and the total will be your net calories
