Getting Back on Track

Hi there!
I feel like I just fail at this counting calories and making a lifestyle change. I try and I fail! I feel so discouraged. When I give up, I binge and then I feel even more defeated. What would you suggest that I do in order to really stay on track? Do you find that eating certain macros or certain foods keep you on track?

Also, are there any friends who can encourage me along the way?

Thanks!

I know what you going through. I am the same way. I just can't seem to find a way to stick with it all. I will do great for a week or two and then I lose motivation. My fiancé has lost weight like it's no big deal and can eat whatever he wants, but he doesn't understand that I can't. I have PCOS, Insulin Resistance, Hypothyrodism and other stuff that all are a constant battle every day 24/7. I just bought a fitbit zip to help me figure out my activity levels, so now I just need to work on the nutrition part. But of course with all my health issues (listed above) my body craves sugars and carbs, so if I avoid them I get cranky and horrible to be around or I feel like crap all day. Never ending battle!

Thanks. I have lost 4 pounds so far so I guess I am starting to figure things out. What kind of things do you like to do for exercise? I mostly walk, but have looked into other things to see if I would be interested, but so far the only thing I might be interested in doing is stationary bike riding classes. Everyone I know is doing Zumba but I hurt my knees in high school drill team that I am afraid Zumba will just make things worse, so I will stick with something else. I need to lose about 60-70 pounds and I know I can do it, but it will be a uphill road.
  • I generally like doing the elliptical, running, doing the bike, etc. I like Zumba, but I get a little nervous with other people watching me. Haha! Congrats on the four pounds! :)

I think the mistake that a lot of people make is that they get very excited to lose weight and then try to accomplish their lifestyle change overnight. Unfortunately a lifestyle change is meant to be permanent and takes a lot of practice to change.

Getting healthy is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't put so much stress on yourself at first. One of the best pieces of advice I got from my personal trainer is to gradually make healthy changes to your life. A lot of people can accomplish a "healthy lifestyle" for two weeks or so but then give in, get frustrated, or just feel like it's all too much because it's so drastic. It's not truly a lifestyle change if you don't do it for the rest of your life.

Give yourself a month or two to fully start your new lifestyle. Eat healthy for most meals of the day and maybe eat moreso what you're accustomed to just once a day. Sound doable? Then start spacing it out, have that not-so-healthy meal once every 2-3 days, then once a week, then once every other week. Same with exercise. Don't burn yourself out by adding it all at once. Find something you like to do and MAKING TIME for it and go from there.

Don't beat yourself up, you have to rest of your life to get it right :)

I agree with making small changes and not putting pressure on yourself to meet any arbitrary deadlines. People will have ups and downs, but just pick yourself up and get back to it. I'm in the middle of a down right now... my diary for the last several days is delicious but not pretty, lol. But I'm working on making better choices again.

Do what is sustainable for you and you'll get to where you want to be. Good luck!
