does a calorie=a calorie?

Ok so im kinda confused. Say my husband (5,9 26 y/o 165(ish) pounds in shape) and myself (5'9, 22 y/o, 205 pounds, not in shape) go on a jog together and we both jog 20 minutes at a 5.0 mile pace. Would we burn the same amount of calories or would he burn more, me burn more? Im just confused as to how that works. Thanks for the information! So in summary basically i want to know if we did the same thing do we burn the same amount of calories?

The heavier person burns more. You need more energy to move more weight over the same distance. The person who is less experienced in running burns slightly more also, because of not being that effective at running. Also in general the person with the more muscle burns more. But a difference in weight is the basic factor in your case.0

Not necessarily the heavier person - men typically have more muscle mass which is more efficient at burning calories - most programs that calculate calorie burns ask for specifics such as age, weight, gender, height and calculate based on the information provided.
I am not expert but the specifics are requested for more accurate calculating for a reason - I can't give you the scientific reasoning but the programs are made with these factors in mind.
I don't use the MFP calculator for exercise as their numbers are usually high I use a different online calculator.

I cant get on that website its blocked from my work (almost all websites are blocked like google bing most all websites) My fitnesspal just happens to be not blocked. I dont have internet at home either.0

I tried the recommended calculator, and it looks like gender accounts for roughly 10 calories per mile. But the calculator still isn't taking into account that it might be comparing a 165 lb skinny-fat man to a 165 lb muscular bad-*kitten* weight-lifting chick. I would expect HER to burn at a higher rate. I am not aware of a calculator that takes all of the variables into account, but I figure the one I'm using is close enough. I'm losing weight using the input it provides, so there's no need to look closer.
I'm actually in agreement that your weight difference is going to play more of a part in how many more calories you burn than he does. That's ok, though - since you're burning more calories, you'll lose weight quicker (if you also keep your eating in check.)

I hope he does a good job washing those dishes. Maybe next time he'll bet that you burn the same number of calories no matter what speed you run for a mile, and you can get a steak dinner, too!0 -
