How to lose weight & get healthy without fruit

I can not eat any fruits and am very limited on the vegetables I can eat. I have lost 28lbs and need to lose another 42ish. I am 26 and go to the gym 5 days a week however I only do the treadmill/elliptical since that is all the dr. will okay due to my umbilical hernia (that he will not fix until I lose weight).

I know diet plays a large part in weight loss but I have hit a road block. I live on bread , pasta , meat and potatoes since that is basically all that doesn't cause me horrible amounts of pain.

Thanks in advance !!!!

    You can't or you won't? /:
It makes a big difference in how I want to answer this.
  • I can NOT. I get blisters/hives/throat swelling and horrible stomach cramps. I had to be given a epi pen b/c my reactions are so bad (Cucumber sent me to the ER , Banana causes me issues with breathing). I try to sneak some fruit in and I pay for it because I am in horrible pain for hours. I will get blisters in my mouth and throat and hives on my face/neck.
  • I am trying to figure out if I can eat fruit that has been cooked but so far that has not been a success. We are farmers and grow numerous fruits and vegetables and I would love to enjoy them along with my family

Gotcha. I am so sorry that happens to you.

First of all, I'd make as much use of the vegetables you CAN eat as possible.
If grains aren't a problem, try whole grains instead of pasta! Quinoa is a great one and it has some protein in it, and barley is also pretty good.
Beans are another very healthy source of protein, and can be used to make things pretty creamy and yummy.
Hummus is always great, with whatever veggies you can manage or pita chips.
  • Can you eat steamed kale? It has a LOT of the vitamins in it that you would be missing w/ fruit.
  • Thank you. I am going through an elimination diet sort of thing to figure out which vegetables I can and can not eat. I have scheduled an appointment with an allergist but its 2 months away (I have been seen before and they said I had Oral Allergy Syndrome but it has gotten worse so my doctor wants me seen again). I seem to find new things all the time (Pecans and Nutmeg are some I realized this week. I normally have a reaction after every meal so I am really trying to pin-point it down)

Weight loss is more about the number of calories you consume than what you eat . Of course you can eat a whole lot more volume of veggies and fruits than you can meat/potato/pasta. Unless you have any sort of insulin resistance where the potato and pasta would prevent weight loss. Otherwise, just stay within your calorie goals. If you are hungry a lot because of high carbs, try increasing your protein and getting some protein with every meal.

Has your doctor recommended you take vitamins to supplement what you are probably missing in your diet?

Sounds like you have already figured it out! Congrats on 28 lbs!

Like you're probably doing, you just eat things that fit into your calorie goal and try to hit your macros. There's nothing magic about fruit and it's certainly not required for weight loss, especially if you have a reaction to it.
  • I feel so tired and weak and I bruise constantly all over so I am going back to talk to them about vitamins etc. :) I just feel like I am very unhealthy since I cant have fruits/veggies and every good recipe I find has something in it that I can not eat
