Hysterectomy Complications in Overweight Women???

Hey there... I have never started a topic in these boards, but I thought this might be the best place for advice.
Looking for feedback from women who have had a hysterectomy while being overweight. I have discussed this with my doctor and he said that there is a chance of greater complications in the surgery itself, and in healing afterwards. I have also researched this topic online, but would appreciate hearing from anyone here who is willing to share their experience first hand.
Thanks for your help!!! :flowerforyou:

I was about 265 when I had a hysterectomy 9 years ago. I had the hard version of the surgery where you end up with 30+ staples and a very impressive scar. The surgery went perfectly and my recovery was typical other than getting my iron level back to somewhat normal, but that had to do with the issue that lead to the surgery (fibroids) and not the surgery itself. I stayed out of work for 6 weeks because the doc wouldn't clear me to go back until my iron level was acceptable.
I certainly can't say it was any fun, but I can say that once my recovery was done, I felt better than I had in years.

I had mine at over 300 pounds. No complications, no trouble healing. I do have a nice long scar though. Was out of the hospital two days after the surgery, spent a couple of days at my cousin's house and then went home. I did get a pretty bad UTI after about a week that required a trip to the ER and some IV antibiotics, but that cleared up quickly. Thanks to my surgery, I was and am cancer free.0

The degree of overweight may make a difference, the age at which it happens, whether it is total including the ovaries and cervix, the reason for the operation as well, if there is no choice because the projected outcome is a premature demise, you take it on the chin and stay around for many years to annoy the life out of friends and family and to be a help too. there are probably fewer complications in someone who is well prepared and relaxed. I'd not go for it "just" for heavy periods. (me,35 cycle 10 day ........ pain, clots, binges and all. There was no sensitivity one just had to live with it, even if/when you felt you were dying) I would try anything rather than this radical action. Establish the real cause of the problem which prompts the operation, which can be diet in general or something more specific. I hope you can find someone who is sensitive to the patient's needs, so as not to sever all and every nerve ending, some will go. life in one way, will never be the same again, there are many products to combat dryness.
I was frightened for my life. I even deep cleaned my bed down to the floor before I moved in to it. On the day of my op "I had to have" my husband on the ward to come back to. I wore TD stockings and had to keep my feet moving from time to time to keep the blood flowing. My daughter and husband found it amusing that after a period of recovery sleep my feet would have a good flap when I was awake to think of it. Make sensible use of the pain re-leaving self activated drip you will probably have. In order to help the wound heal it helped to lie with it uncovered, now I'd say lightly covered so the air could dry the area.
For me had I known of my dietary idiosyncrasy's and had they not been "at the edge of science" now, as I was told recently, more so then 14 years ago, and in my youth, I'd have made the changes I have to live with now, so very long ago.
I doubt this will be of much, if any help. All the very best. It's a pig of a place to be.0
