Who here makes there own granola?

I love the stuff! And just started making my own (as it is cheaper for me to make it then to buy it).

What do you use in it?

I use: Rolled oats, raisins, a mix of dried(? there raisin like) mango/cranberries/blueberries/cherries, walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg and honey.

I make 6 cups of it each Sunday and it last me for the week.

Granola causes mucus to exist in your system. A lot of people are not tolerant to mucus or gluten. It sticks to things and causes all kinds of problems in your digestive track. For this reason I avoid it like the plague. Specially if you're trying to lose weight, this is usually not a good idea.

Other than that, granola tastes great. I know grains are bad for us but I still like it... :)

might i add my granola is gluten free. we have gluten sensitivities in our family. and when made with natural, local honey...its not bad for you....in moderation! its a filling snack, and with fruit and nuts in it...how can you go wrong?
  • I am with you kvr414!

My Doctor gave me the mix....I am a super picky eater, and was not getting a lot of stuff I should have been! I asked about the mucus thing too. She said that since I drink 1 1/2-2L of water a day that this would not be a problem. Granted I still don't understand how it causes mucus to build up?

refined grains (white flour, white rice, noodles) are generally "bad" for weight loss/overall health, but whole grains (such as the oats in granola) are an essential part of a healthy diet and are a MAJOR source of fiber. the nuts and seeds in homemade granola (cashews, pistachios, sunflower seeds, etc) are pure protein and omega-3 fatty acids. although granola may have a fair amount of calories, it has a ton of nutrients and makes a filling snack.

where did you hear about granola causing excessive mucus in your GI tract? never heard that one. haha :)

anyway, i'm not trying to get on your case! i just gotta advocate for my whole grains! haha
