did I walk long enough today?

I only walked .25 of a mile and burned 99 calories, what would be a sufficient workout? I mean how many calories should I be burning, I am thinking of going out and walking again even further.

I walk 40 min in hills. Or sometimes just walk into town and don't notice

Is this a serious question? I will assume it is...

Depends on your current level of fitness. Was it a challenge? If so, you probably walked far enough for a single session, but if you can do another session, that would be great.

When I started out, my goal was simply to go a little further or a little faster each time. It usually isn't a good idea to start off your fitness initiatives by running a marathon.

Also, 99 calories seems like a lot of calories for a quarter mile - how did you come up with this amount? This indicates that a mile walk (20 minutes-30 minutes, at a moderate or slow pace) would burn 400 calories, or 800-1000 calories per hour. That is a massive burn rate for most of us.

^this. Because I weigh 220 and at 4mph, .25 miles would burn about 25 cals for me.

If this walk took more than 5 mins, I suggest you burned zero 'extra' calories.

So to answer your question ... no. no you didn't walk long enough today. Unless of course walking isn't part of your plan. Then you walked too much.

I get my numbers from endomondo. Very cool app. Gives you a map of your walk/run/whatever. Announces every mile. Can auto-post to MFP. Lets you listen to music ...

What was intent for your walk? Is this your only form of exercise? So many questions...

Walking is my all time favorite form of exercise...I like to mix it up, always beating the length I go or the speed I go. Mixing it up with lots of hills and pumping those arms as well, if you have a dog your walking along with you on a leash you will get an even better workout.

It is all about your comfort level at the time. Were you breathing hard? Did you feel sore later? What was your food intake for the day? How long did it take you to do this? Is walking your only source of working out?

Afterwards did you follow through with some stretching? Yoga can really increase your bodies ability to do more than before with its practice.

Let your body be your guide...try to outdo yourself each time you go and I am sure you will improve your heart muscle the more you walk.

All the best to you and by the way, Congrats on getting your body moving...It all starts with one step, followed by the next!!!!

No. Unless you have an injury or something. If you're not used to walking at all and you have no physical injuries, try 30 minutes.

to maintain just the weight you are at you would walk 10,000 steps a day. To lose weight you would walk more than that. 10,000 steps is equivalent to about 5 miles for the average person. For .25 mile 99 calories burned is WAY WAY TOO HIGH!!!!! If I input my weight into my treadmill and at a brisk walk uphill 5% incline I still only burn approx 24 calories. If you are counting on those 99 calories to be able to eat back you WILL gain weight doing this. No one is saying that you should start a marathon but dont count on those calories to eat back.

It all depends. Are you working out to lose weight? If so, you might want to walk more, but if you're already eating at a deficit you're not obliged to. I wouldn't say it's a big walk if that's what you're asking, but there's no such thing as "not enough" or "too much", it all depends on your purpose while doing it. :)

I'm just coming back from foot/ankle surgery and I walk 0.25 m.le slowly. How fast are you walking? Get caught up in the scenery and enjoy your walk not thinking about exercise and you will walk a lot farther.

If you walked .25 miles and burned 99 calories, you may want to figure out a different way to calculate that. That seems high to me.

I walk 6.5 km (4 miles) home every day, most nights i do another 1-3 miles with the dog, weekends I walk 5-8 kms
a good hour at a brisk walk (so 4 miles) really only burns in the 300-400 range depending on your heart rate / fitness level so go from there (I'm working towards doing a half marathon in may and I only started walking seriously in mid january)

I will add I always walk instead of drive or transit if possible (so short trips to the store walk, home from work walk, to work walk stop to stop until the streetcar comes. I only drive now for longer trips or to do major shops - not sure how this would work for you though

    .25 miles. Almost a marathon!

I wouldn't count that as exercise if it were me. I walk more around the house than that every day. Unless you're seriously mobility impaired then no, .25 isn't 'enough'
