Just Run!

I used to be the type of person who hated running. My workout buddy years ago pushed me to run at least a mile. Back then a mile seemed like a distance of 10000000000 miles! I would run .25 mile and would be already out of breathe and ready to give up. I would start running and already start thinking of the need to take a "walking" break. Well, eventually I was able to build some stamina and was able to conquer that mile! I started enjoying running a little. Eventually I aimed to run more than that but I just couldn’t, mentally! I had installed barriers in my mind that if I took one additional step, I'd collapse.

Earlier last year, I succeeded to run 2 miles! :drinker: I kept working on my endurance and stamina but never imagined I could run more distance and duration wise. In additional, the adrenal rush is what would keep me running on the treadmill. Today came that day where I ran not 1, not 2, but THREE miles non-stop! This is sweet victory for me! I enjoyed my 3 mile run! Running has become therapy for me because once I’m done with that long run, I know I’ll have a clear mind.

A message I want to send out to everyone is basically don't build any mental barriers, take that chance, take that extra step. Like Nike says, "Just do it!" and I just did :)

I used to say the same..ran all the time in the army and when I got out I said I'd never do it again. I started last year and I can't get enough!!!

congrats and welcome to the addiction
  • Running truly is therapeutic, and I'm so glad it's doing the same amazing things it does for you that it does for me. Congratulations on your accomplishment!!! :flowerforyou:

Last year, one of my friends started a challenge to either work on speed or distance. I was always afraid to run, because I don't have much cartilage in my knees and they're already crunchy. One of her friends saw my response and told me to suck it up, so I figured ok, challenge accepted! I still haven't run a full mile at one time, but I did learn that I actually love running/wogging/jalking. Running up the first hill felt like knives being stabbed in my knees, but after that it was no problem! I'm with ya, you really just have to get past that mental barrier.

I know what you mean about having a clear mind after a nice, long run. I feel like running is the closest I get to meditation; it is my anti-depressant.

Congratulations! Just wait until your three-mile run is a "short run" for you. :drinker:

^This. Never in my life did I think a three-mile run would be a 'short run' for the day. It's amazing what you're capable of once you get past the mental barriers. :flowerforyou:
  • Just under two months ago, I couldn't jog one side of a block without stopping and catching my breath and wheezing. I would come back inside the house and it would sound like the graveyard was rising. After the gruesome week one... If I could get up that hill and just one block farther, two blocks farther.. three.. Week two wheezing was gone... and I was taking myself past the mile. By the end on month one I did a consistent 3 miles, not the fastest but consistent. Jogging is great meditation.. The mind is really always a little cleared after a good one.

Almost 2 years ago, a friend of mine persuaded me to "go for a run". (The look on his face when he realized I hadn't run in about 35+ years!!) I though I was gonna DIE! I kinda "flirted" with it for a little over a year (run for a few weeks, then stop for a few months) until July 25, 2013, when the running bug infected me, and I never got the vaccination for it!

Just this week I took a look at my logs and saw my 1st week of running (Jul 25th) and compared it to this week....I could not believe how much I've improved in 6 months time! Never though the girl who would do ANYTHING to get out of gym class growing up would now be a runner!
