                    I am a bit confused.   Let's say one needs a minimum of 1200 calories a day just to function.  If you eat that many then workout burning 500 calories do you need to eat that much more.  I'm trying to lose weight...not maintain.

            It's 1,200 *net* calories a day. So yes, if you burn 500 calories in a workout, then eat those calories back (for a total of 1,700 calories consumed). MFP will automatically give you those 500 back when you log them in your diary.0

            If you need 1200 just for your organs to function (BMR) and you accurately burn 500, you should eat 1700 calories (you will still net 1200).0
