Hi!!! I'm Staci I am 44. I live in Southern California. I'm thin 5'6" and 105lbs. Been stuck at this weight my whole life (since 14/15) except when pregnant. I guess it's time to start working out with weights. My backside doesn't stand up like it used to and has lost volume so, I must have lost muscle mass. I like to run and hike but that's all I do. I have been a vegetarian for 5 years. My kidneys cannot filter animal protein. I now have chronic kidney disease because I was bullied into eating meat when I never did like it. Everyone drilled the "you need protein" into me. I hated being called picky. I've learned just listen to your body and do what is right for you. I did have a serious ice cream addiction but have had to stop doing that (and my nightly martini) as my blood sugar is borderline. Getting older sucks!!!
My diet is good. Loads of veggies, fruit, beans, nut butters and grains. I want to get some muscle volume back. Thanks for allowing me to say "hello'

Well, you DO need protein in you. A lack of protein could be contributing to your muscle loss, along with the lack of a resistance training program. I commend you for wanting to start weight training. You should see great results IF you get adequate protein and calories. There are many vegetarian bodybuilders out there who have had great results. And there are a lot of people on this site who manage to get adequate protein as vegetarians. Do some searching through the forums and you can get some great info. Good luck!0

I think its my age and this desk job haha. The muscle loss is just this year when I started the job. I do have to be very careful with protein as I don't want a kidney transplant...boooo!!! I eat beans, nuts, soy, cheese (small amounts animal protein). Any other non animal ideas? Thanks for responding!0

Sorry, I'm a meat eater, but search the forums for "vegetarian protein" or something along those lines. There have been many posts about protein sources for vegetarians. I hope you find what you're looking for!0

Lentils are amazing! For one cup, it's around 230 calories and 18 grams of protein!
Yogurts are really good. If you can eat greek yogurt, I'd say go for that. If you can't, there's always soy and other based yogurts.
Nut butters are great too, if you're not already eating those.
There's also soy protein powder. You could look into that option as well!0 -
I like to use nuts, seeds, beans, chickpeas, garden peas, broccoli, lentils, bulgar wheat, quinoa, soy milk, tofu, edamame beans, couscous, soy yoghurt, pasta, porridge and breads to boost my plant-based protein intake. I'm Ovo-lacto, so I eat eggs, cheese and veggie stuff too, but I try not to rely on it for too many meals.
Lots of other fruits and veggies have a little protein in them too though (like tomatoes and mushrooms, which I love), and it all adds up when placed in a meal. Track your intake on MPF and see for yourself.0 -
Do you like quinoa? Or tofu ? Rice and beans? nom nom nom now I've just made myself hungry. Do you know if you're allowed a certain amount of animal protein per day? Just asking because I see you said you can eat cheese.
As for weight lifting, everyone at work said my booty looked great when I was really into squats ;D0 -
I work as a research nurse in renal dialysis and transplant and have done since 1989. I'm glad she has deactivated because there wil be people who believe that chrinic kidney disease is caused by being made to eat meat!
Not all such pts are told to restrict their protein but this may not be the place to be seeking specialist advice.0
