Hey you guys.

Is there anyone else out there who is just quite literally NEVER thirsty?

I don't know what the heck is worng with me, my doc says it's the strangest
thing and he has no idea why. If I try to drink a big glass of water I literally
just feel like i'm drowning so i only drink through a straw or with a sports top
bottle. even then, I only drink when i remember to. Sometimes I can go
two whole days and it's only when i start a migraine that I say to myself,
whoops best get some fluids in.

It's so wierd and I am trying so hard but I have just has a glass of water and it was
ridiculously hard to drink considering the hot day it is (here in Dublin) and now I
feel like I have all this liquid sloshing around inside me and it's horrible!!

Maybe I'm just a freak, haha.

If anyone else feels like this too I'd love to hear from you or if anypne else has any
tips about how I can get more fluids into me? Eating salty snack doesn't even work
for me....... Amy-Louize x

Do you ever drink anything else? Coffee in the morning? Tea, perhaps? Sometimes you get plenty of fluids in your meals each day and you just don't realize it. I never log my water because half the time it is consumed via coffee, tea, or some other form rather than just water.....

Nope, no tea or coffee or even alcohol.

When I have a bad headache I have an ice lolly or two to try get my fluids up.

Here is the wierdest thing. I can't even drink alcohol. If I have a glass of wine
or an alcopop or something, once I get to drink number 3 I start my hangover
immediately (no next day hangover for me just a ruined night). I often
wondered if this was because I was de-hydrated already and have had a
glass of water, then a glass of wine, then another water, then another wine
and then comes the headache!! So I just gave up alcohol altogether, there
is simply no point because I can't enjoy it.

When I was 18 - 22 I would have drank any guy under the table (can drink here
from age 18) so I don't know what on earth happened.

I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but I'm rarely thirsty. And I only drink by sipping slowly - I can relate to that 'awash' feeling when I drink a lot of fluid. Plus I really hate the splash of large quantities of fluid in my stomach.

My husband can neck a whole pint of anything in one go, which to me is unthinkable.

Personally I'm not really bothered by it. I just accept that it's the way I am. Perhaps it has partly to do with our personal physiology and partly to do with where we live - you're in Dublin and I'm in London, neither of which is the driest climate in the world.

Bekahrogers might have a point - I do have a couple of very large mugs of tea most afternoons!

I'd be interested to see what other folk have to say.

That's interesting about the climate, although i don't know anyone else who is in the same boat as me. Sounds like your tea is ticking you over nicely.

I'm like this, too. I'm NEVER thirsty + I prefer a straw and people act like it's the weirdest thing they've ever heard. I've been forcing myself to drink 16 ounces of water (not nearly enough by normal standards, I know) occasionally, I enjoy a tea or coffee but I sip it slowly and it's more about the taste than me needing a drink. I'm only thirsty if I'm really overheated or if I have been doing cardio. I can make a can of soda can last for days.

Okay so I don't have thirst, and one day listening to my grandmother she does not have thirst either. So this summer my uncle was talking and I heard him say he doesn't have thirst. So I started to google. Apparently your hypothalamus gives you thirst. After google search after google search I could find people with the same problem as us but no condition or doctor reply to a post. But there are us out there, I can go for days without having a brain reaction that tells me to have a glass of water. I forget to drink because I don't get thirsty.

This is not good for us because having adequate water helps us regulate temperature and organ function. So Ive been trying to keep bottles of water on counters, tables, in every room so when I walk past I take a sip. Its not working too well but I hope it's a start.

I'm not that much of a drinker either and prefer a straw. I can sip on one bottle all day unless I workout. That's the only time I can down much of a bottle quickly. I've noticed that since I started drinking uncarbonated flavored water, I am drinking more than when I had only sweet tea. Well, I'm forcing myself to drink more. I'm up to at least 2 16 ounce bottles a day. It has sucralose so not the ideal drink, but it's better than sweet tea for now. I no longer drink soft drinks since I found this water, but I could sip on one of those all day with a straw and still come home with half a bottle. My hubby is amazed by this since he can finish one off in minutes. LOL

The only thing I typically drink quickly is coffee, and that's for flavor and habit because I used to have trouble breathing in the morning and coffee opened me up. I sometimes still catch myself leaving half a cup because I'm distracted and not thirsty.

My daughter is the same way. When she was young, the doctor was always telling us to make her drink and I think she still doesn't drink much. I'll have to watch when she comes home for a visit next month. LOL

I am never really thirsty unless after a workout but I find as I make myself drink water I can tell when my body needs more water.
  • I am the same pretty much, I can go with out drinking all day except if I'm eating chocolate but even then if htere's not drink near me i'll just leave it and its fine

however i'm aware how unhealthy it is and for the last two weeks i've put in great efforts to drink as much squash as i could, i'm now on just water (due to the bad sweeteners in squash) and i'm pretty used to making sure i drink this much ever day and my body is starting to get used to it as well. to begin with it was all that sloshy feeling also!

Do you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables? They're about 85% water, so if you do, you could be getting most of your fluid requirement through your food.

I'm the same way, I don't get thirsty. I force myself to drink, I had to start setting an alarm on my phone to remind me to drink. I too can have a drink last for 2 days. My kids thought it was funny because "Mom isn't good at the chug chug game". I am now up to drinking 8 glasses of water a day and I have to confess I hate it. I hate that sloshing feeling, I hate trying to down a bottle of water. So I try and sip all day long. I'm lucky to have a desk job so I can have the bottle sitting on my desk.

Do you sometimes feel hungry when you have already had a meal not long before? Sometimes I mistake hunger for thirst.

I'm a water hog and drink tons of it, but sometimes when I'm busy and I don't drink as much as usual, I feel hungry and drinking water satisfies it.

I had a nurse tell me she didn't get thirsty and would keep bottled water around so she would remember to drink it. She said it's some function in the brain (she was relating it to hunger, because some people just never feel hungry or always feel hungry and it can be because of something in the brain - of course sometimes it has to do with the foods we eat, not like us MFPer's can go around saying I ATE THAT ENTIRE CAKE BECAUSE OF MY BRAIN!! even though that would be a nice excuse :] ).

Sorry I don't have more information, that was a long time ago and that nurse has since retired. You should see your doctor again or perhaps a new one or a specialist?

In the meantime you should probably continue drinking as much water as you can, even if you have to slowly sip it, at least to stay hydrated!! Good luck!

Yeah, the reason I suggested that is because of what you said about getting an immediate hangover when you drink alcohol. That can be a sign of suboptimal liver function (not saying it necessarily is, but it's worth considering).

This may not apply, but I was always told that when we overeat..or we THINK we are hungry/ starved...It is actually that we are thirsty. We have trained a response to thirst to think food instead. Lots of people quench with diet sodas...which is just as bad as stuffing crappy foods. I weaned myself from sodas by sipping water thru a straw instead.

The alcohol thing may be related to the amount of sulphate..sulfides...not sure which it is..but wine has it. Sometimes it gets to me quickly too. Depends on the wine. My husband can't drink any at all! Instant headaches!

    Good Luck!

I've never been a big drinker. I have to make a point to drink. I always have a cup of water at my desk and sip throughout the day. I still only get about 5 glasses of water a day but that's ok. It really isn't important to be drinking "so many" glasses of water a day as long as your body is hydrated that is the important thing. You can get hydration from fruits and veggies and other things too. As long as your urine is a very light yellow your body is hydrated. The darker it gets the more dehydrated you are.

I think I read somewhere that when you are dehydrated that can also make you not thirsty. It's a viscous cycle.

I never said it was a condition, but its very interesting to google because it has doctors stumped. Not drinking can lead to tons of symptoms and I have some of them like your body having a difficult time regulating temp, ever since I was a kid I get sunstroke often and get cold fast.
  • I want to share my story on the forum in response to this thread. I am a 47 year old and I also don't feel thirsty. Infact, as growing up I don't remember when i felt thirsty. I probably did drink some water but don't remember drinking a lot of water anytime and I grew up in north india where summer temperature gets to 45C (110F). I am a fairly sporty person and played cricket for hours every day growing up and even now i play some intense tennis atleast 5 times a week.

Two years back suddenly I started to feel bad with metallic mouth taste. We then found out that my BP was very high and that my kidneys had failed. I have had no other physical problem before this incident, I rarely had been to hospital and this was was the first I was admitted to a hospital in my life. I got a transplant done in summer of 2011 thanks to my sister who donated her kidney.

We have not been able to find out the reason for my kidney failure. My hypothesis and guess is that I was perpetually dehydrated as I did not take much water and hence that put undue pressure on kidneys leading to their failure.

I don't feel thirsty even now but I have made it a routine to drink atleast 2L of water a day. Even now when I forget to drink the required water, i start to feel strange and my hands and feet start to burn. I immediately know that time to drink some H2O. Given that I am aware of this situation, I can clearly se the difference in being well hydrated and dehydrated.

My son is 10 years old and he also does not feel thirsty. I am working on him to get into habit of drinking water regularly.

I know what I am saying is not scientific (and I am a scientist) but my experience seems to suggest that not drinking enough water can be risky and harmful to the kidney.

My suggestion to people who are in similar situation, please make sure that you get your kidneys tested regularly and try to drink some water daily. It is better than a kidney problem later.

I'm rarely thirsty or think to drink water. It's always been a struggle for me. I typically only drink anything if I'm eating. So when people say I should be downing water all day.. I can't even imagine. And when I do down water all day, I'm peeing all day too.

Everyone is different. If you're not severely dehydrated and otherwise healthy, I don't know why it would hurt you.

I am never thirsty. Ever. Which is not a good thing where I have lived, Texas, Montego Bay, and Thailand. I feel the same way when I try to drink a lot of water. My throat kind of swells and I can't drink much at a time. I find that drinking room temperature water sipping every few minutes is the easiest way to get water in me.

I have no idea how much damage I've done to myself going years only drinking water every few days, but I find drinking really helps my skin, weight, and how I feel.

If you're getting alot of headaches and feeling 'hungover' after a couple of drinks you are seriously dehydrated.

No idea why you don't feel thirsty, but really it's irrelevant, you need to keep your body hydrated. Try drinking a glass full every hour.
