Broke my wrist while jogging

Went for my first run in weeks on Saturday and my dog managed to trip me up and send me flying causing two massive facial bruises and a broken wrist. I will have a cast for six weeks. Any suggestions for cardio while I am in a cast?

I'm sorry. I had something similar happen. Did they tell you not to run? I broke both arms, and didn't have any restrictions as far as cardio.

If the banging from footfalls hurts, you might try an elliptical if that's an option for you.

Sorry, that stinks. Hope you heal up quickly!

Did the doc contraindicate anything? I'd think you'd be able to do pretty much any lower-body cardio (including running) once the wrist isn't super touchy...generally not very long with a broken wrist. If the weight of the cast throws off your stride, you could carry a light dumbell or wear a wrist weight to even out the weighting.

Otherwise, if you have a gym with a recumbent bike setup, you pedal one of those like a madman without swinging your arms at all.

Ok, maybe I am being precious and assuming I shouldn't run. It is too damn sore at the moment but I imagine that most of the pain will be gone in a week or so - I will check with the doctor at my next appointment. Running is the only exercise I enjoy.

eliptical maybe a bit hard as you either have to hold on for balance, or hold on to the arm things that move back and forth.

i would suggest stationary bike, esp an recumbent one, or even just walking.

I broke my wrist March 13th and had plate put in out the 20th. Once soft cast came off and stitches removed April 2nd, I resumed running. I got the no tie laces from Nathan, so no tripping hazards. My doctor didn't want me running outside because of tripping hazards, but I hate the treadmill, so I'm running outside happily. I figure you can fall anywhere at any time, and I can't live in a bubble. Hope you are doing better.

    Walking.

I'm 3 weeks post shoulder surgery so I understand not wanting to do anything too stressful. I can walk fine, but can't swing my arm, or put any weight on it. Walking is a fine cardio exercise, it's just going to take a longer time investment to burn the same # of calories you would have running.
