Burning fat and gaining muscle at the same time

Those who say you can't burn fat and gain muscle at the same time are wrong. They just aren't trying hard enough. I've been doing both successfully for 6 months now. Stay dedicated, never give up, and you can do it.

Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable while on a calorie deficit? Probably not. The body is either anabolic (building) or catabolic (tearing down). They both don't happen at the same time.
This has been debated on here on several threads and usually the consensus is that while one MIGHT be able to build some muscle while trying to lose fat (body recomp), it's going to take quite some time to see significant results.

I'm doing it just fine. I believe the mind is very powerful. I choose to remain ignorant and I don't listen to anyone who says it can't be done. When I lift I imagine I'm moving mountains and I actually believe I am after a while. Tell your mind that you are building muscle and losing fat (and truly believe it), and I guarantee you your mind will defy all logic and achieve the impossible. I was told by doctors I would never go to college after being diagnosed with PDD. I graduated and I'm going to be a doctor. Screw impossible. Tell yourself you are going to do it and don't take no for an answer.

I have found that there is a difference between gaining strength and gaining muscle mass. One can become stronger while on a deficit but true moderate muscle mass increase is unlikely except in the beginning of training for obese individuals. As we lose fat, sometimes it may appear that we are gaining muscle but it is more likely that we are merely uncovering the muscle definition that is already there and being developed. As for the PDD, with proper treatment and medication, there is no reason that one cannot go to college and be successful... I know of a fully autistic kid in college right now and he is being successful. Congrats on your accomplishments.

Yeah because all doctors know that physics and science are total bullsh!t. Lol

Most of it is generalization, every body is different and lot of people are outliers. All the formulas aren't accurate either, people should get tested and get accurate measurements on metabolism, fat burning etc.

While I'm not against the power of positive thinking, over coming a mental block isn't the same as defying a physical one. You can't WILL your body to build muscle.

Need to be careful with the "don't happen at the same time" statement. Within the same instant - no, within the same week - yes, within the same day - possibly.
It's quite funny how in my training lifetime bulk/cut has gone from a niche activity to becoming mainstream.

I'm recomping by the way as it's about #5 on my list of priorities and can confirm it's slow.

Metabolism is viewed as catabolism minus anabolism. The body is ALWAYS working in catabolic state. This isn't disputed by journals of medicine. It can be overcome by excess in anabolism, but to grow this would have to be pretty consistent.
So if we're speaking in terms of how the body chemically works, then yes within the same day one can be catabolic and anabolic. But if we're speaking in terms of adding lean muscle to the body, then on a deficit probably not. If in maintenance, possibly. Somewhere in gaining muscle, there's a surplus going on even if it's slight. And to maintain it, calories have to be adjusted.
