Maybe I'm the only one

Maybe I'm the only one with this problem, who knows. I joined this community because I need help. I'm fairly active, I'm constantly on my feet, walk to and from work (1 hour of walking total), walk my family dog a few times a week for another hour/walk, I do hot yoga, when it's not freezing out I run, I like being active. Sometimes, depending on the time of the year I'm more active then other times, but overall, I wouldn't say fitness is my biggest struggle, it's food.

I'll be doing SO well. I'll find the motivation, do a cleanse (not one of the liquid ones or anything, just a few days with lots of green tea, water, no grains, just protein, fruits, vegetables, nuts, you know, all the good stuff) and then I'll eat clean most of the time, throw in some grains here and there so long as they're whole, I'll have a cheat day to be social and enjoy myself and get rid of cravings and then one day BAM I have an off day, it's not my cheat day and then the whole thing is derailed. Next thing I know every day is "tomorrow I'll get back on track 100%" and sometimes I do for a bit, but then I struggle again, or I do the "I'll restart on Monday", or "Well, I had that burger...might as well ruin the whole day and get it over with". Such a pain in the butt. I'm totally lacking the initiative, and self control to get back on the wagon. I lost about 15-20 pounds before christmas and I've probably put about 5 pounds back on. I'm frustrated and am looking for tips.

How do you have a "oops" moment and not totally fall off the wagon? How do you control your cravings? Where do you find inspiration?

Thanks :)

    Welcome, Hobbit.

Trust me, you are not the only one. What you describe is what got most of us fat, kept some of us fat, and continues to keep some people fat.

Weight loss is not about what you eat, it's about how much you eat. Eat less calories than you burn and you will lose weight. What helps is to Chuck that mentality that says you can only eat certain things to lose weight. Deprivation does no good.

GOLDEN RULE: eat what you want but practice moderation.
  • My inspiration is in the cemetery, about 6 feet down. It's a long term, lifestyle change you require so falling off the wagon should be viewed as just a blip, unless you are constantly over eating. It's not a game and you can only cheat yourself, and your loved ones, of the better future you envisage. The ultimate truth is that you can't have it all ways, you have to put in some effort and, as an adult, take some responsibility for your actions. You can't just think yourself healthier.

The truth is that there is no wagon.

Sounds like you need to reevaluate your "clean" lifestyle. It does not matter if during some periods you eat the "perfect' foods, it is a lifestyle you cannot maintain. It cannot be either just fruit and lean meat, or a free pass to eat all the junk food in the world. You need to find something less strict, you can live with everyday, without waiting for the cheat days to have fun. Everything in moderation, or you cannot do it on the long run. If you see it as a diet, it is not going to work.
