Hi,

I was just looking for some advice on my "diet".

I have been struggling to lose weight by just cutting out junk food. I was never a big junk food eater any way. Im one who preferes a nice sandwich to a chocolate bar.

Any way I have been eating pretty good for the past 2 months (hardly and cheating with junk and eating whole foods) and exercising mostly everyday exept weekends. I usually walk for about 50 mins a day and about 3 times a week I am on the tredmill for 20-30 mins running at 8kmph.

I currently weigh about 64kg at 5ft6/7 at 16 years old female. Thing is I have type 1 diabetes on 3 injections of insulin a day. I'M aiming to lose a stone at least in about 4 months and hopefully keep it off. Im not trying to fad diet. Im not planning to go back to eating the way I used too(even though it wasn't that bad).

The amount of research ive done is ridiculous. My body doesnt respond to most attempts of losing weight I have tried. Im so desperate to lose this weight. Im seriously unhappy and no matter how much I try to tell myself im not fat, I just hate the way I look in the end. I want to go to florida in 5 months with my family amd feel confident. Not wobbly and bloated and flash my cellulite covered thighs to everyone at the beach.

Im getting so hopless at my attempts. I know the only way to lose this weight is to lower my insulin. which means less carbs and sugar= less insulin=less fat storage and hopefully weight loss.

But my body must hate me.

I low carbed for about a week mainly eating meat and some fruits (not a lot) and veg and exercising. I lowered my insulin significantly but when I exercised I found my self with extremely high blood sugars afterwards. I think my body is slightly resistant to insulin because when I take what should be my carbs to ratio dosage for a typical 30g carb meal I end up high.

I was thinking of doing a diet containing mostly vegetables and chicken. Chicken seems to be the only meat that I like that doesnt make me really high afterwards. I think ill find this easy to stick too. Afterall im currently living on mainly vegestables for the past few days because im trying to regain controll of my blood sugars. But I know its not healthy long term to eat just veges so I can add chicken for now. See if that affects it.

I know some of you will insist I eat more of a variety than this bit honestly its hard to find foods to eat that are low in carbs and sugar even if it does come from trees. And I really need to cut down my insulin without getting high blood sugars

Sorry this is long . I'm so desperate. Any advice would be so appreciated. Any any type 1 diabetics who have lost quite a good bit of weight in 4 months. Tell me what im doing wrong! :(

  • I'm sure this is not what you want to hear but why you would want to lose a stone at 64kg and 5'7''?

Have you discussed this with your dr, dietitian, diabetes nurse, or whomever it is you see for advice and help with your meds and carb counting/distribution/insulin ratio? Eating mostly veges and chicken could put you at serious risk of hypos if you don't get your insulin right. In fact, drastically changing your diet in any way should be discussed with a trained professional. You have already said that your current diet change has resulted in high BSLs......

MFP is not the place for advice in your situation IMO. Please discuss this with a professional who knows your situation. I'm sure they could help you with a healthy way to lose some weight.

Im more 5ft6 than 7 but I haven't measured my height in a while so im guessing.

I want to lose weight because I feel fat and unhealthy and mainly unhappy about the way I look. The usual reason for anybody. I know im not overweight but it doesnt mean I shouldnt lose weight.

Anyway my medical team suck basically. They lose my records constantly tell me im a healty weight etc etc. I have asked for advice on losing weight from my diabetic clinic and normal doctor: "exercise and eat healthy" is the line they pull most of he time. I asked for a diet plan fron them and it was a very basic eat well plate diagram.

I felt like I was in primary school again being told how much of each section you should eat. Didnt help at all. That was my diet round about the time amyway!

You see doctors and professionals from my experience dont really give a dam about you trying to lose weight if in their eyes your "healthy" eg. In the green range of the BMI chart on their office wall.
They dont have time for it. Too many genuine overweight to deal with, and I dont mean to sound horrible or anything.

Anyway I gave up on doctors. Decided to take matters into my own hands. With consequences, yes. But only I can figure out how my body works, even though im asking for advice on this. Its ironic I know. But it is only advice. Not necessarily answers. Thanks for your relpy anyway :)
  • The thing is, health professionals follow practices and guidelines and they would likely consider it not a good idea for you to lose much weight. You would be low priority compared to someone who is morbidly obese trying unsuccessfully to control their BSLs, perhaps losing their eyesight or risk having their toes amputated due to circulation problems.

Anyway, I was 16 a long time ago, but I do remember that I always hated it when I wasn't taken seriously and I would go ahead and do it anyway, despite advice that went against my plans. So.....I know I'm some random person on the internet but please take care in your efforts to lose weight. In fact, your situation means that you must take extra extra care. There is some good advice on MFP about losing weight at a slow steady pace. This one in particular:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1175494-a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants?hl=sexypants

You don't need to drastically cut carbs. I fact, I would strongly advise against it for your situation.

    Good luck!

Yeah, thats what I mean. They dont really have time to deal with those who dont actually medically need to lose weight. Wich IS why I tend to try and figure it out for myself. If I lose a stone im not going to be underweight. Ill still be a healthy weight so I dont see it as a problem personally for me losing such an amount.

Thanks for your help anyways. I'll definitely take a look at that link. I guess im just worried about the time period I have to do it in. I dont feel like 4 months is enough if I have already basically wasted 2. Anyways guess I just have to b patient :)
  • One more thing, when I was 16, I weighed about the same as you. I'm the same height as you. I used to be so critical of the way I looked. I had a little belly and curvy hips and I was never happy or satisfied with my body. I always thought I needed to lose weight. I wasted so much time and energy on being unsatisfied with myself. Looking back at old photos, I actually looked amazing! I was so caught up in the airbrushed photos in magazines and TV, I just couldn't see how good I looked.

Many years later and I now weight 68kilos. I still look great but I would prefer to weigh 64 kilos. I don't worry too much about it now though because I have the luxury of experience and acceptance of my body. I will always have a little belly and wide hips. It's partly genetic and partly bone structure. My husband loves my little belly anyway. I just try to keep fit and be strong, which is one of the reasons I'm on MFP. There is great fitness advice here.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that you probably look fabulous but you are seeing yourself through extremely critical eyes and so you are beating yourself up about and focusing on what you see as flaws in your body. Have you ever looked at the website My Body Gallery?

    http://www.mybodygallery.com/

It shows what real women look like and I'm sure that if you put in your stats and look at women with similar stats, you would see how great you look.
