Feel the burn...but calories not being burned on MFP?

Ok quick question.......im new at this and maybe im just not seeing it....but why when i put in my weight lifting or strength exercises does it now change the calories? I KNOW weight lifting burns calories...so whats the deal?

if ur entering it on the bottom" strength training" its just to track ur reps ect. to track burned cals you have to go to strenght training under the top part " cardio" like u would for running or elliptical.0

Weight lifting is not a cardiovascular exercise so it does not burn a significant amount of calories. It does build muscle though, so it's definitely a good exercise to keep up!0

yeah, i just enter mine under cardo. the strength training portion doesn't give you that option...possible update?0

I would disagree with this - as would my trainer, as the weight lifting program he has me on actually burns more calories than my cardio portion of my workout (based on the HRM I wear when working out) - it really depends on heart rate, speed / weight of reps, and a bunch of other things - as mentioned by others, log it under "strength training" in the cardio section.0 -

Strength training burns a lot of calories, actually. And your muscles continue to burn the calories for some time after you stop working out as well, according to some poster at my gym.0 -
The reason it doesn't like to give a calorie amount burned for strength training is because there are too many variables. Such as, how much weight did you use, how many reps, how much time between sets, how fast were you doing it...
If you go under Cardiovascular, you can enter strength training, but it's a very rough estimate.0 -

Actually, weightlifting has been shown to burn as many calories as most cardio exercises, sometimes more. Men's Health magazine recently quoted a study where it was found that an intense weightlifting session burned as many calories as a person running six minute miles for a comparable length of time. Weightlifting may not burn as many calories as cardio exercises while you are actually exercising, but weightlifting boosts your metabolism for up to 48 hours afterward. Not trying to start a fight, just trying to clear up a common misconception.0 -
thanks guys. i knew for sure i can definately burn a lot of calories...especially in a circuit workout! I think the site definately needs an update to just include (and make it more acurate) calorie burn for weights!!!! and its very true...the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn AT REST! what a great natural concept!0
