So after I was advised on here that cold was no reason not to run.... I am now invested $200 deep in cold weather running gear and I LOVE it!!! I wish I'd known sooner that I could have been running all winter.
Now that the cold doesn't bother me, what do you do about ice?? This last week is the first time we've gotten serious ICE instead of snow (got plenty of that) and I fell HARD yesterday just walking. I ran Saturday and stuck to the road rather than the sidewalk but even the roads are icy....
Do I have to wait for a thaw or is there something I can do?

I love outdoor winter running
I go ice or not,
the past few days have been brutal.
I just go slower0 -
It really depends on the amount of ice. Time of day can eliminate thin layers of ice on roads if the sun comes out. Thicker ice requires gear .... from slip on cleats to hex screws embedded in your shoe.

I do not run in the winter when icy. Can't afford to have the cash cow go down. LOL0

You can use traction aids (like YakTrax) or you can put machine screws in your running shoe treads (http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm) or slow it down, shorten your stride and watch your foot placement (confession.....I will , grudgingly, run on my treadmill when there's freezing rain)0

either run on the roads cause they clear those first or run in the grass. It wont be slippery in the grass and you get a heck of a workout. Just don't expect to run as fast or as far.0

Grass? Mine's covered in about 5 feet of snow!  :laugh:0 -
I find the most dangerous thing about running in snow / ice is trying to hop from dry patch to dry patch. Stay off the roads, on the sidewalks, and just tread carefully. The only times I have fallen is when I hop around trying to find "safer" terrain.0
