Protein Shake advice

Im sure there have been quite a few of these questions, but I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for a newbie.
I have just got some Diet Whey Vanilla. Do you use milk/water (does the milk make much of a difference calories wise) also does it matter if I have it for breakfast with some berries, or should I do it just before/or after the gym?
Sorry for what is probably very stupid questions - really appreciate the help.

I use About Time Whey Isolate. I mix it in with my greek yogurt for breakfast every morning to give me an extra oomph. I also eat Quest bars. Milk will add calories on top of the protein powder itself. Most people do smoothies with bananas and berries and such. Personally its completely up to you on how, when and what you do with it. We all have our preferences.0

I use Almond milk, the one with no added sugar and vanilla. 30cal for 250ml. Great taste!

Yes, unsweetened Almond Milk has changed my life... Makes protein shakes creamier & gives keeps them from tasting like watered down crap.0 -

Use the whey to help you meet your protein macro. The time of day you have it doesn't matter.
I usually mix it with non-fat milk, which adds arund 100 cals and another 10 grams of protein, plus extra calcium and other goodies. What you use as a mixer depends on your calorie and macro goals.0 -
I have tried lots of different flavours Strawberry matrix with water is pretty yummy . High protein low carbs and rally delicious .

I almost always make my protein shakes with 2% milk or whole milk it tastes better and adds a bit more protein. The time you have your protein shake doesn't really matter.0

I mix my whey protein with water because 1) the powder is already made of milk and flavored and 2) I don't want to add more calories. If you are concerned with calories then definitely use water - if you actually WANT to add calories, fat or more protein OR if you want more flavor then use milk. The whey protein I use (Natural Factors) has so much flavor already that I really don't need more from milk.
I exercise in the mornings so I like to drink a shake as part of my breakfast (many times replacing a breakfast). Sometimes I have had it for lunch along with turkey slices. So take it any time of day you'd like -- after a workout will definitely help refuel your muscles0
