Hello all, first let me thank you in advance for your suggestions! I am looking into getting either a new set of dumbbells or maybe bands due to the small amount of space in my apartment. Are there any benefits to either or? I love dumbbells but don't have the money to keep buying a new set everytime the current get too light nor do I have the room for all those! Can I get the same benefit (toned) with the bands?

I'm a New Yorker, so I have a teeny tiny apartment also. If I work out at home, I generally do bodyweight exercises (push-ups, planks, lunges, etc.). Here's a good workout you can try:

I wouldn't bother with dumbbells given your limited space, but they do make adjustable-weight dumbbells if you feel so inclined

A pull-up bar that can go on your door frame could be useful, and you can use bands with it to do assisted pull-ups, lat pull-downs and other exercises.

That's what I do in my teeny apartment. Also body weight. You can use the chairs and coffee tables as props, mirror to check form, door frame or table for pull exercises, a bit of floorspace by the bed for sit-ups and push-ups... Backpack with books for squats... You get a bonus workout as you walk from "prop" to "prop" between sets
There is a book called "you are your own gym" which can give you some inspiration, and as one suggestion for whole body dumbbell only routine - this: http://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/dumbbell-only-home-or-gym-fullbody-workout.html0 -
Have you looked into buying a weighted vest? You can adjust them usually by a pound or 2 at a time and use it for "body weight exercises". Generally they are a lot cheaper than dumbbells also.0
