I'm hungry!

Does anyone else wake up in the middle of the night hungry? I mean, really feeling hungry? My stomach doesn't growl, but it definitely feels hungry. I usually try not to give in and just drink some water. Most nights I do find myself opening the refrigerator door around 2am and staring inside. I've been freezing leftovers so they aren't tempting me, but I still find myself looking in the fridge. It is very frustrating.

maybe keep sandwich baggies of celery, carrots, or brocolli right at eye level, so if you do want to snack in the middle of the night (or at any time) you can just grab one quick baggie of a pretty low cal food?0

How long is it between your last meal of the day and your bedtime? I try to eat about 3 hours before bed and go to bed slightly hungry. I can't say my hunger has ever woken me up Are you way under your calorie goal for the day? Is your body just adjusting to the new, lower calorie intake? I hope it stops soon.0

Oh My God! Yes! But I too don't give in. Try to treat your stomach like a child...If you can make it through the night, treat yourself to a good and healthy breakfast. I have been told that your biggest meal is supposed to be breakfast. I don't know if its true. I am not a doctor, but it is the most important meal of the day. So motivate yourself into looking forward to breakfast.0

Not that I'm an expert on this subject.. but I watched a really interesting documentary about people who binge during the night. It appeared to be more of a psychological issue than actually being starving enough to get up and eat. It takes 28 days to break a habit, perhaps keep a diary and see if you can restrict yourself from getting up during the night for a month? Also it may help (as someone has already mentioned) to have a big meal in the morning, and have your smallest meal in the evening (protein rich, as that should keep you satisfied for longer). Eat small meals, 6 times a day so that there are no strong cravings for food ever occurring. If you can't figure it out, talk to your doctor or a naturapath as it may be a hormonal/chemical imbalance causing you to feel so hungry during the night. Best of luck with it :-)0

I will say this.....When I first started, I weighed about 387 lbs. and I would get really really hungry at night and want to go over my calories for the day. I started saving at least 130 calories for a night time snack. I would eat a bowl of instant oatmeal. It is very filling and it is supposed to help with hunger control. It was sweet, so it took care of my sweet craving at night too. It was the only thing that saved me!!!!!!!!!!! I would buy the different kinds of oatmeal.....like Quaker Instant Oatmeal Strawberries and Cream, Peaches and Cream, Blueberries and Cream and Bananas and Cream. These are awesome, especially the Strawberries and Cream. I put 2 packets of Truvia in it to sweeten it and use the I can't believe it's not Butter Spray for the butter flavor. If you can spare yourself the 130 calories til right before bed, it just might help you too. Keep us posted as to how you are coming with it. Best of Luck!!!!!

suggestion: I keep sliced apples with cinnamon sprinkled on them in the fridge so when I do that and i'm looking around because I feel nuts and need to put something in my mouth I have that as my option. usually only two slices get me right. even at 2 in the morning. I don't deny myself when I feel that intense, I just make better choices.0

Kimmie,
First of all congrats on three beautiful kiddos! I have four beautiful kiddos, and just got bigger after every one of them. But I wouldn't trade them for anything, and I'm sure you feel the same way. As for being hungry in the middle of the night I must say I know that feeling. Did you recently start this new lifestyle? If you did, it does take a while to get used to. When I first started, it was three weeks before that constant hungry feeling went away. It drove me nuts. But I managed to muddle through it. It does get better. I believe that you are doing the right thing by drinking the water. Maybe a glass of lowfat milk before bed will help to stave that hunger off, though? 100 calories for 8 oz of 1%. It's tough being a busy mom, and you usually eat what they are eating. Sometimes finishing off what they didn't eat on their plate. (I am so guilty of this! lol) But ever since we changed to a healthy lifestyle things have been much better. Hang in there, it'll get easier. Feeling better and results on the scale will let you know that you are headed in the right direction. Take care!! :happy:0 -
My Mother is a registered dietitian. She will get a little desert bowl and put low fat cereal and skim milk to tie over hunger. Milk products are good before bed time. (ie. low fat cottage cheese.) Never eat meat, heavy spice or alcohol before you go to bed. It will mess up your sleeping and might give you heartburn.0

I keep a big water bottle next to the bed. A big gulp or two before I go to sleep, wake up, pee, two more big gulps, back to sleep with a full feeling tummy!0
