Type 2 diabetes diet

Hi guys, I've recently started a weekly weight loss and healthy eating group at mine. I'm not qualified, just educated. I'm not telling people what to do, just sharing information and offering support and maybe some advice.

I've had a lady join who has type 2 diabetes and she has trouble with going to the loo because there is a lack of fibre in her diet. She eats a lot of vegetables, but has to avoid fruit and cereals because they are high in carbohydrate.

Apart from suggesting she up her veg intake, I'm out of ideas to help. Anybody got any knowledge in this here?

Many thanks

  • I should probably add that she also has a nut allergy x
  • That's great that you've started a group and are sharing support and information. Sometimes people with diabetes cut back too much on carbohydrate-containing foods. I would encourage her to work with a registered dietitian to figure out what works best for her. Legumes like kidney beans, black beans, garbanzo beans and lentils are excellent sources of fiber. Legumes also contain carbohydrate,, but the fiber content tends to slow down digestion and produce a lower rise in blood sugar levels. ~Lynn /Glucerna

She is probably getting enough fiber from the vegetables. I will almost guarantee that she needs to up her fat and water intake.

We don't need as much fiber as they try and tell us we need. If she is eating as many vegetables as she says she is, that is plenty of fiber right there.

We don't need grain in the form of breads and cereals.

And as a Type 2 diabetic I eat vegetables and fruit. She can have fruit, just not an unlimited amount of fruit unless she also has high triglycerides.
