Why do I always self sabotage? I lose 14/16lb, and am doing really well, then I always sabotage myself. It starts out with just a little bit extra, and I maintain, then the little bit get a bit more, and the exercise slows down and I end up back at the beginning. Why can't I seem to get past this.
Any advice would be great.

I was about to give you some sage advice until I realized I am still in my PJ's and not at the gym... oops!0

You sound like me. If I can count how many times I lost 10 pounds I would have been at my goal weight so long ago.
I don't know why we do this to ourselves. I'm guessing that food is our drug. It's our "go to" when we need comfort and apparently some of us need major comforting.
What I am finally doing is finding out what triggers a binge (for me it's sweets). For starters, it's my job. It's stressful and I eat sweets all day long (not anymore). I got myself out of that habit by giving up sweets for 21 days. I know I can get the habit back as easily as I got rid of it but I fight myself when there is something brought to the office by coworkers. I think about the nice weather coming and how I would love to not wear a sweater to cover up.
What are your trigger foods and situations?0 -
I am the same way - I have just decided that I can't do that anymore - If I truly want to get back into shape and lose weight I have to work for it - nothing comes easy! :flowerforyou:0

It's being bored for me, and chocolate is my downfall. But I'm also susceptible to crisps. I've found cassava crisps which are only 85 cals per bag.
I've got my mum's 80th birthday in April, and a christening in June, and I'd love to stop this yoyoing before then and fit into a nice dress instead of being the frumpy one.0 -
Stand in front of a mirror and then ask yourself if you want to continue looking like that or want to look like the person you know you can be proud of. If you are weak to sweets, do not buy them. Order your shopping online (if you can), this is what i do most of the time as it stops me from picking up those "special offers" and when i do go to the store, i know exactly what i want and i do not make any detours to the binge section. You can do this, you were born strong and you have the willpower to overcome yourself.
Do not give up!0 -

I had a giant bar of dark chocolate from christmas - i broke it up into the smaller squares and stuck it in the freezer - when I get a hankering for chocolate I grab 2 squares out of the bag (I still have some)
I have found that even though I love salty snacks my best strategy is to not buy anything like a chip - I have often eaten double or triple the serving using the excuse that they are lower cals so I can have it anyway - if I am going to snack on something I am better off just grabbing something healthy like fruit or veg or even a sandwich with one slice of bread in the evening.0 -
because it's a diet...you think it's short term...
You get to lose the weight and you are done.
Guess what you're not done...you have to learn how to maintain. Which means one of two things.
Eat maintenance calories for exercise or eat maintenance for no exercise (less calories)
And by the sounds of it from most posters you are all depriving yourself of the stuff you crave/love/want to eat...why?
I love chocolate...ah hello I am a woman. I eat chocolate every night...or a nice hot sweet toaster strudle...
I eat French fries, i eat bacon...I eat what I want...and still lose weight.
There are all sorts of tips and tricks to keep yourself in check...
1. will power or as I put it wanting it bad enough
2. weighing out a portion, log it and eat it. I often do that with chips and realize I only want 1/4 of the serving once it's in the bowl cause it's just not worth it.
3. making sure you are in a "reasonable" deficet not this 2lbs a week thing...1200 calories or lower...0 -

Are you able to stop at 1-2 pieces of chocolate? If not, then don't start. The cravings will subside, I promise. I don't know what a crisp is but if you're able to control yourself with that, then by all means eat em.
Whatever you do, include whatever you eat in your calories on MFP. Most times I plan my meals for the day, add it in MFP before I eat it and I stick with exactly what I planned to eat.
Good luck. You have to think to yourself that you can do this. You control your mind, don't let it control you.0 -
For me it's choosing between a bit of self control or opting for another 30yrs of yo-yo, feast/famine and beating myself up. Why would I choose the latter?
I sorted my head in 2012 and haven't looked back. It's a choice when all is said and done.0 -
Loosing weight is not about loosing weight . It is about a change in your lifestyle for a healthier and happier you. The sooner you realize that the better off you will be.0

Personally, I believe it's because most people take the short view of life rather than the long view. In other words, choices are made due to what I want now rather than the consequences (good or bad) that will occur later. And we don't just do it with food. That's my opinion.0 -

I did the same thing. Enough of losing and putting a little back on, a little more until my new clothes are tight. Enough!! I am on track and getting it off. Back to my goal weight soon and into my spring/summer clothes.0 -
I hear you! I seem to be following that same path. When you find the answer, let me know. Hang in there0

I'm going to try the standing in front of the mirror every morning to motivate myself.
My chocolate habit is curtailed by having 25g bars of dark chocolate.
Thank you all for the advice bad tips.
