  • It's a bit unforgivable that the doctor didn't give you some diet advice.
The best advice I can think of is to try to increase the amount of fresh vegetables in your diet, and decrease or cut out all together any ready made foods. Try to make everything you eat either something you made (like a salad or sandwich) or something you cooked yourself from scratch.
Also, go easy on the booze, and if you are overweight, why not start doing mfp to help you lose some.
Also, go back to your doctor and ask them for advice on the best exercise for your personal situation, and also for further diet advice.

Watch the documentary Hungry for Change (it's on Netflix), it talks a lot about various ways of improving health and things you can eat to clean the liver among other organs.

Yeah, I had a CT scan for stomach pains, and got a letter in the mail stating I had a fatty liver. What kind of crap is that? And I work in healthcare, too

Google has been my friend lately... Good luck!!

Did you ask your doctor for advice? It seems to, me that when we get a diagnosis form our doctor, it is his responsibility to offer a reason for the disease and a "cure," and our responsibility as patients, is to ask for one if nothing was suggested.

Fatty liver is nothing to joke about; it is a medical condition, produced by alcohol, diet, hepatitis, obesity, etc... You may need the help of a GI specialist, or a nutritionist to help you with your diet, more than the help of a group of people in the internet to solve your problem.

    Read below:

"Fatty liver, also known as fatty liver disease (FLD), is a reversible condition where large vacuoles of triglyceride fat accumulate in liver cells via the process of steatosis (i.e. abnormal retention of lipids within a cell). Despite having multiple causes, fatty liver can be considered a single disease that occurs worldwide in those with excessive alcohol intake and those who are obese (with or without effects of insulin resistance). The condition is also associated with other diseases that influence fat metabolism.[1] Morphologically, it is difficult to distinguish alcoholic FLD from nonalcoholic FLD, and both show microvesicularand macrovesicular fatty changes at different stages.
Accumulation of fat may also be accompanied by a progressive inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), called steatohepatitis. By considering the contribution by alcohol, fatty liver may be termed alcoholic steatosis or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the more severe forms as alcoholic steatohepatitis (part of alcoholic liver disease) and Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)."

I hope that you get the proper medical attention soon. Good luck!

I'm trying to battle my diet as I have also been diagnosed with fatty liver as NASH. i was told to reduce my intake of saturated fats and processed foods. High-fructose corn syrup is especially bad for your liver as it raises your triglyceride levels yet leaves your brain craving more sugar (so I have read). Basically, increase your exercise (even just walking), stay away from saturated fats and eliminate processed foods.

    No to this. ^

    OP:
Please go back to the doctor and work with them and/or get a referral to another professional.

Beautiful dogs on your profile pic MadDogManor.

Please be careful when using advice from the internet. There is no oversight on what people can say and you might end up completely ruining your health.

Web MD, the American Liver Foundation and the Mayo clinic are responsible resources as is the NIH website:

    http://www.webmd.com/hepatitis/fatty-liver-disease

    http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/nonalcoholic-fatty-liver-disease/basics/definition/con-20027761

    http://www.liverfoundation.org/abouttheliver/info/nafld/

    http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/nash/

OP, I didn't notice on your post so if you addressed this I apologize in advance but if you drink alcohol, even a little bit, stop immediately! Alcohol is hard for the liver to process and your liver needs a little pampering right now! :blushing: If you smoke, that can also contribute (although I don't belive a direct correlation has been found.)

I wish you the best. :flowerforyou:

I was told over the phone that I had fatty liver and a RX for metforin was being called in. No reason explanation otherwise. I researched the metform and found that one use is for the liver. I have had to research and realize that I can turn it around, bases on what I eat. The alternative is pretty miserable. It has taking awhile, but i finally got the point. It is my choice to live or die.

Uh, why didn't you ask your dr for this same advice at the time he told you about your liver? And why didn't he offer the information? Sounds like he's not a very good doctor, but you're not a very good patient, either. Good patients ask questions. This is your own health, if you don't advocate for yourself, who will? Not that crappy dr, I can promise you that.

NASH and NAFLD are real serious issues! When I was 20# heavier, I was feeling some discomfort in my upper right quad. It may have been my imagination, but I felt I was on the path to these diseases. That was more motivating than any desire to look good. That discomfort is almost gone, now.

Here's a white paper that offers some nutritional advice: http://www.dsm.com/campaigns/talkingnutrition/en_US/talkingnutrition-dsm-com/2014/04/NAFLD_NASH_liver.html

You are soooo right! You CAN turn it around. I have.

(Also, I don't trust all these meds we are being given by "doctors." I went in because I was having acid reflux. Without trying to find the cause the doc simply put me on Omeprazole, which I understand 20% of the country is on. I started losing my hair. I attributed that to low thyroid. But every couple of days my bathtub would have a bunch of hair in it after bathing. One day, I found out that Omeprazole can cause hair loss. I stopped that day. Would you believe that my hair loss also stopped - almost immediately!!! I have cut back on white flour, sugar and yeast. And my acid reflux is gone! Moral: If diet can help the cause, I'd rather diet than be put on meds to help the symptoms!!!!)

Anyways, you CAN fix fatty liver with diet. The liver is very good at repairing itself UNTIL it gets to the cirrhosis stage. I am a big believer in helping my own body fix itself.

    Good luck on your journey!

    Here are some tips:

    Low fat diet
Lose 10% total body weight in the next 6 months (very do able)
Limit alcohol - 1 serving per day for women/2 servings per day for men

Unless your liver function labs are also abnormal no need to repeat imaging to assess resolution. Fatty liver is very common especially if you are overweight/obese, have elevated cholesterol or triglycerides, if you are diabetic or have hypothyroidism.

    Hope this helps!

I totally agree! Not sure I'd go back to a doc who diagnosed me with fatty liver and didn't mention diet or nutrition. This medicate! medicate! medicate! attitude that so many of our physicians have is terribly uninspired. In fact, I think it is a cop out. Far better (for us, the patient) if our docs were to try to change what is causing the problem in the first place.
