well, for me to lose 4lbs a week and working off 500 calories per day, I could only eat 300 calories per day. Never going to happen.

I have a question, how many calories would I have to eat if I wanted to lose, lets say 5 lbs a week with one hour of exercising on a stationary bike.

    0.

    And even then, no guarantees.
  • What is your maintence level in calories ? I.e to not gain or lose? If you dont know use a calculator - http://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html
Then add the calories you burn on to that figure EG 2400 Maintenance + 500 Exercise = 2900
2900- 2000 Defecit so 900 calories to eat.

    This is the best response

can someone please just give me a simple reply on how many calories to eat a day to lose 5 lbs a week
Not without knowing your height weight and activity level.

    Rigger

my height is 5 ft 7 and weight is 230 lbs..

and 39 yo and male so definitely in the obese scale so you can lose at a quicker rate than some

TDEE is 2303 if you are sedentary (ie desk job little to no exercise)
losing 2 pounds a week would be 1303 calories a day (which means weighing all you eat to be accurate
to lose 5 pounds a week you would need to be at -197 calories a day based on this - not only not sustainable bloody dangerous to your health. people have gone on very low calorie high exercise regimes for short periods to lose a lot (thanks Hollywood for more delusional thinking) but it is under the supervision of medical and trained personel. You can burn more through exercise (I walk 4+ miles a day and burn about 400 that way and I eat them back and still lose at 2 pounds a week)
lose at a really rapid pace and you lose muscle, bone mass and all other organs not just fat, it's called starvation - no your body won't shut down and stop burning or concentration camp victims would not have looked as they did before death
    I started just under your weight December 21st (224) I'm 199.4 today
when I hit 180 I will revise to 1 pound a week goal and work on building more muscle (so eating more and eating back more exercise calories) because the goal is not just loss but permanent healthy loss. If you (or your "friend) don't get that you need to speak with a professional.

so in case that didn't sink in the only way to lose at that rate for your size is this (if you are 600+ pounds and 5 feet it may be possible)

I'm just curious....if you don't want to do it....why ask??

The only SAFE amount of weight to lose is 1-3lbs per week, anything else is dangerous and more than likely to come back two-fold!
