Why am I putting weight back on?

MFP has set me to 1200 cals/day. Before I started tracking my food, I was like "Oh that's easy that's almost what I eat now". Then I realised I was a little bit off with that estimation and was eating maybe 2000 cals a day before now. According to scooby my BMR is 1546 and TDEE is 1856. I've been shooting for the 1200 cal goal every day and eating back exercise cals as you can see from my food diary. I rarely cook things from scratch as it's expensive for me to get the ingredients so many of the cals I eat are just printed on the back of a packet. I'll generally try to go for the healthy option but not always. I'm quitting smoking so right now, taking away my occasional junk food would kill me. I always log it though. I can think of a few reasons why I'm putting on weight myself.

1 - Water weight. It's only a few pound and I have been doing more exercise than usual (damn you Jillian).

2 - Inaccurate logging of the tiny tidbits. I never log things like Frylight, cups of green tea, the occasional stolen bite from my friends plates. I just can't see how these things could possibly even get me over my BMR, let alone enough to go over TDEE as I'm eating at such a deficit.

3 - "Eating too little". Makes no sense to me. Calorie deficit can't possibly mean weight gain.

4 - Eating the wrong things. Makes no sense either even if it is naughty and unhealthy of me, as again I'm eating at deficit.

5 - Maybe I'm pregnant :l my implanon was supposed to be out a few weeks ago but I forgot. Surely can't be this either though because the hormones can't just suddenly drop from your bloodstream after precisely 3 years.

I'd love to hear any insights and I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's just option 1.

Also just to add there have been a few days in my diary that I didn't log. I'm in the lab a lot of the day now and don't get the chance to visit MFP but I'm always conscious of what I eat.

We need more information to make an accurate suggestion. Also, your activity is restricted to only your friends.

I hear that it is super easy to get pregnant right after getting implanon out.

Whatever else you do, get a pregnancy test.
  • My doctors doing one for me when I go get it removed next week. I'm pretty scared about it tbh, but I haven't actually had the implanon taken OUT. It's still in there, and as far as clinical evidence from Wikipedia suggests, the hormone levels are sufficient to prevent pregnancy even in the 4th year of having it. Whew, I'll keep telling myself that. I'll open my diary up.

If you're eating a lot of ready meals/processed foods for convenience, it's likely that those foods contain a lot of salt. Salt can cause you to retain water, so this could account for some of your weight. You should definitely also LOG EVERYTHING! Including frylight, stolen bites from friends' plates etc (or just stop eating from friends' plates!! ;-)
It's definitely not eating too little -"starvation mode" in the definition that gets frequently bandied around the internets is a myth: no-one ever got fat, or retained fat or whatever from not eating enough - just ask those starving children in Africa! Starvation mode is a real thing, but it's when your body starts burning protein as fuel because there's no carb or fat left. NOT GOOD.
You're probably not pregnant from having a slightly out of date implant (though best to get it checked just to be sure!) and anyway, you don't put on that much weight at the start of pregnancy anyway - your baby would be like the size of a peanut so don't stress :-)

Your sodium is incredibly high. That doesn't just affect water retetntion in an active person. On an ongoing basis it impairmes cardiovascular function and proper thyroid function.

Assuming you're over 110 lbs. in bodyweight, you dont have any days where you've gotten much more than half the protein your body needs to build lean muscle and shed fat. MFP underestimates dramatically.
  • Also, just so you know, most teas don't have any calories, especially green tea or other herbals teas. :D

When I get pregnant my weight goes down. But that would be a priority to find out.

Number one reason you're gaining weight: You're eating too much?

Measure or weight or estimate accurately. Lot every stupid thing you put in your mouth.

Make sure that the 'potion' you are logging for calories is the portion you're eating. A bag of m and m's has TWO portions in it. Just sayin'.

a normal bag of m&ms has one portion unless you get the king sized bag, which is obviously 2.

But I agree, make sure you're logging what you're actually eating.

What is putting weight back on? Weight loss isn't completely linear. If done properly, it will go down, over time. Going up doesn't necessarily mean you're gaining weight.

This recent thread graphs it out - http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1196878-weight-is-not-consistant-loss-is-not-linear
