I agree that she is an adult and can earn her money whatever legal way she wants, however, she is still representing the university. I understand that as adults, we should be allowed to legally do what we want with our lives, but when you are doing something on the side that could have a negative impact on your school or regular place of business, then it's time to get your priorities in line. Does she want to be a porn star? Great more power to her! Does she want a desk job after college? That's fine too, but she needs to decide what she wants more.
Lol, you do realize that there are many NFL stars who are "thugs" that went to Universities and are praised as heroes for their schools?

Of course I realize that. I don't think that's right either. As to the question of "why" it affects the reputation of the school, it's because people are so afraid of being judged instead of letting people live their lives. If, for example, Duke were to lose any funding because she's a porn star, my guess is they will kick her to the curb and follow the money. There is no clear right or wrong answer here. It's unfortunate that people can't legally live their lives as they wish without compromise, but it happens. Since it happens, there are personal decisions she will have to make.
Agree. If they do kick her out (I'm sure they'll find a technicality) you'd have to think how naive the university, supporters and alumni are if they think that paid porn would discredit university. Practically all colleges have some online porn sites depicting their students in their colleges who aren't getting paid. You see university banners hanging in the background. I hope she gets to stay and continue whatever classes she's taking and paying for.

I read an interview she did a week or two ago off a cnn link, she said that she likes doing it, that it makes her feel empowered, that it's a decision she made. I don't think she made the decision to do it because she wanted to pay for school. The impression I got for the article was that she is a porn star who is going to college, not a college student who was scraping by and decided that she felt like she was boxed in a corner and porn became the solution. There's a difference: porn star student, student compelled to be a porn star.

I don't feel bad for her, and I don't judge her decision. I don't remember if it mentioned what degree whe was getting, but I hope that it's something along the lines of psycology with a focus on sex, because anything else and I believe with this level of exposure (pun intended) she will have a difficult time finding a job . . . in say banking.

women's studies I think. after turning down a full ride at Vanderbilt supposedly

A kid at a college in PA got in trouble for doing this to pay his bills. He paid cash and paid school off before even graduating and they wanted to throw him out. All colleges these days care about is their reputation and cash, it's not about education anymore.

To be fair, many colleges (especially those that have their base in religion, for example Duke was founded by Methodists and Quakers) have a morality contract that incoming freshmen sign. The person makes a decision to enter into the contract or find another school. I'm uncertain if Duke or the school you're referencing above have this contract, but many do.

I'd beg, borrow, and steal before I'd let my daughter do porn to pay for college.

I for one believe in liberty. Do what you want in life as long as it doesn't hurt anybody directly, I am not going to bat an eye.

On the other hand(ahem), I think her name will be googled immensely...

Yeah.. Duke may not have been the best fit for her. There are plenty of good liberal colleges who would have been fine with her being in porn. It's hard being young and finding out that you aren't who you thought you were. Oh that who you really are isn't considered acceptable by the mainstream. I feel kinda bad for her if she didn't know she wanted to be in porn when she enrolled and then got into it later, but she cerainly wouldn't be the first to wind up in a situation like this. Or, maybe she likes to challenge the system.

I think it's despicable that most everyone watches porn and then look down on the people who make it. Seriously.

    Also this!

I'd hope that I raised a daughter that didn't want to do that for a living. I don't have any moral issues with porn, or the people that perform. But it's a really seedy world, lots of drugs, self-esteem issues, and just not something I want my kids doing, even if they think they are cool with it at the time.

Did she try suing her parents for the tuition first? I hear that's the way to go.

There's a big difference between looking down on someone for what they are doing, and worrying about the long-term ramifications of such a career. Hell, I worry like crazy about my son's choice to join the Marines! I don't want him doing that either! I have seen PTSD first hand. Doesn't mean I look down on people who join the military, I just don't want my son to do it. But he's already signed up, and leaves in June, so I don't have a choice in the matter.

Oh I went to high school with this girl. Not a pleasant individual.

I couldn't care less to be honest, what she does does not affect me, however I think she is incredibly naive. I'd be surprised if she looks back in a few years and takes pride in her present actions.

The disadvantage is it's like a tattoo...it's forever. If some high brow company goes to hire her later and sees this, there go her chances. It's her life though, live and let live.

As a mother to a daughter I would do everything in my power to make sure she never had to feel forced into making this choice.

As a mother to a daughter, if my daughter still chose to engage in this activity as a career choice or a springboard to a career choice, while i would have trouble with it, I would support and accept her decision, but would hope she was as safe as possible.

I would prefer that she didn't make that choice, but I believe firmly that women own their own bodies and that is our right and privilege to use them as we see fit.

I do not feel the college has a choice to eject her based on her career choices. Not unless they were willing to replace her income that she would lose for quitting her job.

I support this young woman's right to feel proud of her job, she made this choice, it's her body, if she is proud then I'm glad for her.

I don't think Duke has any business in this, as long as she pays her tuition and costs and I don't feel anyone who isn't living her life with a full insight on her choices and decisions has a right to judge her for those decisions.

We simply do NOT know her reasons and don't need to know.
